Using cash points in Europe

Post by Schoe000 » Sun Mar 24, 2013 12:00 pm

Hi I was using Nationwide to get free cash withdrawals in Europe but they no longer do free cash withdrawals in Europe. Anybody know of a UK based bank or building society that does free cash withdrawals in Europe.
Thanks Nick

I'm not sure any British banks give free cash withdrawals these days, maybe Santander, but who uses them? :(

I'm with Nationwide, and the cost of getting cash out is peanuts.. having said that, I normally use my Nationwide credit card where possible, this is still free from transaction charges..

Thanks for the reply, but the speed that the French seem to change their legislation the book will be out of date.

visa cards used to be fine but ive found since most of my card providers have swapped to mastercard they dont want to know in france, shops are okay but im talking about automatic fuel pumps, autoroute tolls, unmanned stuff. i try and avoid them anyway but on a sunday sometimes you have no choice.
credit cards give reasonable exchange rates, get one that doesnt load the fee for use abroad (read the martin lewis link above) and pay 2.5%(£3 min) per withdrawal. its a pisser to have to pay to use your own money but thats the world we live in. i get £120 out at a time to pay the minimum.
the post office used to do a prepay travel money card that you loaded up before you left, dont know if they still do.

And you can virtually forget your credit cards in Germany, shops mainly only accept debit cards from German banks or cards that have EC "electronic cash" chip.

The larger petrol stations do take debit cards but I wouldn't rely on them.

As for cash point machines make sure your bank knows that the card will be used out of the country, I've known banks block good cards due to "out of habit" withdrawals
