Trip planning

Post by wobblybox »

To celebrate my 40th I'd love to take on a ride to remember, never done more than a day out before and I haven't got a clue where to start, the plan so far, to ride as close as possible to the coast around the uk.
Hints, ideas, or have you done this? I really haven't got a clue where to start planning, how long will it take, how much will it cost? Where should I miss/not miss?

I did a Round Britain trip in 2009 - the plan was to keep the coast in sight and I planned a route using A, B and unclassified roads. Total distance was just over 4500 miles and I was away for a fortnight. If I do it again I would spend more time in Scotland, particularly the stunning west coast (Applecross etc) and take the fastest route possible past parts of the industrialised north east coast. I camped most nights - not pre booked, but just started looking for sites around 6 - 7pm.

Don't hesitate, just strap a tent on the bike and go!!

Forget the Uk and head abroad.
Ferry from Hull
Train o/night to italy or germany
Switzerland austria germany italy and Slovenia all got fantastic roads.
Bikers are treated much better in europe its not that expensive.
My wife rode to Slovenia last year and she 2 years biking experiance.
Just do it you wont regret it.

Don't plan, pick 6 things to do like this.

1. Travel 100 miles camp or b&b
2. Head west or east to the nearest seaside town.
3. Head north or south any distance. Camp or b&b.
4. Head north or south any distance on A&B roads only.
5. Head for the hills/mountains enjoy twists and turns.
6. Choose what you want to do today.

Then throw a dice, which ever number comes up, that's what you do for the day.

The fun is in the unpredictability of it.

+1 with the European thing.

Fuels cheaper.
Weather is better & more predictable.
Bikers are not lepers.
Camping is cheaper.
Food is cheaper.
Beer is cheaper.
Roads are better and less crowded.

With 4500 miles to do, Europe is your oyster. Spend a day getting through France and the scenery is unbelievable.

Having past my test at 43 (yes late comer),in February, I started planning a trip to Portugal and Spain for the following July. Mrs R2 and I did 3000+ miles in Nth Spain and Nth Portugal on a 1500 Goldwing, overloaded, and with no hotels booked.
Cheap, great weather, fantastic roads, great people, and easy.
OK the ferry to Santander is a bugger (£price wise), but that trip change out holidays for ever.

Whatever you go for, DO IT !!!!

The holiday starts when you leave the front door.

If you ride like the wind, expect to get blown away. One lifetime is all we get use it wisely this ain;t no practise.
