I think Sat nav is amazing, but maps are like art. My mate got a E type, so for his Birthday I got 1968 road Maps.
Have been reading some guide books and have been to the Artic twice before, I think being bitten is more likley in August. Now I have my route, I can book the longer Ferries and read up on what to see.
Stella next, would of been great to have shared a beer in Germany that was a great trip you put together.
North Cape Norway

Wild camping beware of the mozzies 'nd midgies though.
Don't speed. If you do DON'T get caught, you might not come back

Re: North Cape Norway
just to say good luck with this trip David.
i would like to know the "true" cost of the round trip when you get back.As you posted earlier, the ferry alone is around £1000 and as a rough estimate another £500 ish for fuel food etc ?.

Re: North Cape Norway
a tip bob my frend took 6 bottles of cheep bottles of wiskey with him and bartered them eg a full tank of petrol 1 bottle .£11.00 not bad!david wrote:Thinking of ticking North Cape off the to do list this Summer. Anyone been? So far just got a map out, looked at Ferry prices and the Harwich to Esbjerg Is about a £1000 rtn. So its Calais to Northcape via Pulpit and the Coast up and run back down through the middle. Got about 10 days to do 5500miles, got a transalp so not a problem, camping as its fun and Im skint.
So any ideas of routes, what to see and advice please folks

TOP advice, as long as I don't get thirsty, cold, or get man flu, or any other reason to crack the bottle(s)moto al wrote:a tip bob my frend took 6 bottles of cheep bottles of wiskey with him and bartered them eg a full tank of petrol 1 bottle .£11.00 not bad!david wrote:Thinking of ticking North Cape off the to do list this Summer. I spent about £2,000 last year but that included accommodation because we went early in the year and the campsites were all shut. It's difficult wild camping when you can't get your bike off the road because of snow :laugh:stanbloke wrote:just to say good luck with this trip David.

We were going to take the cheapest crossing then ride up from there but the difficulty in covering high mileages in winter meant we opted for ferries all the way to Oslo and that ramped the price up a lot.
Re: North Cape Norway
Used to pay 20 francs to get out of Calais in the Truck without them dipping tanks. Will pick up fags on the ferry if I have room.

I've been up to the Nordkapp twice......On my then new 1150GSA arriving 1st June 2003 after four days riding from Haugesund and again in 2007 but this time in my Landrover Defender from Stavanger and arriving again after four days driving on the 25th may.....Followed by driving over to Kirkenes and the Russian border at Grense Jacobselve which was rough but well worth the visit.
It's always great to cross the Arctic Circle in Norway which i've done on several other trips but reaching the Nordkapp gives you a great sense of achievement especially after such a long ride even though you do have to pay to go there.
It's really too early to go in mid may when i went as some of the roads can still be very bad with snow as i found out in my Defender......It's also bloody cold and when we arrived for the first time at the Nordkapp at 1.00am in the morning although broad daylight it was around -6 degrees C and too cold for motorcycling although it soon warmed up in the tent out of the wind!
I like the E6 'Arctic Highway' and there's a great book called 'Norway's Arctic Highway' by john Douglas which gives you excellent information about the road and it's history and attractions along the way aswell as some interesting side trips.

I went late July to coincide with the first sunset and in the sun it was warm, I left the Nordkap island in search of somewhere to camp and in a wind sheltered bay lay in the warm sun at 3:30 and slept. Surreal and brilliant, the temperature difference in some of the sunless areas was amazing,
