I'll ride slower when they stop claiming for porno

Post by Alun »

I was talking to a few wise old heads in Stratford the other night about the proposed reduction of the national speed limit to 50mph. As you'd expect from a bunch of grizzled old men in leathers with warp factor burns on their lids there was not one in support of the proposal.

In fact the unanimous opinion reached was;

A 50mph limit, coupled with the nationwide implementation of average speed cameras, will mean less time looking at what's happening ahead and far more time spent checking the speedo and a corresponding decrease in concentration on what could really cause you harm. A far better idea (to reduce accidents – or raise taxes) would be to come down harder on all the cage drivers phoning, texting, making sandwiches and generally acting like their on some sort of mobile social picnic.

Question - do they pause the porno when making policy, I wonder?

Hi guys.
In reply to your post, I feel that the problem with cars today is that they nearly drive themselves & therefore drivers do not concentrate.
Automatic, wipers come on, lights come on, heated seats, air con, lots cup holders, talking to people, mums with babies, etc. etc.
You can have a drink or eat your sandwich. On a bike you have to ride it, look all around, see the people in the cars not concentrating. We have signs saying "think bike" but it should say "bike think cars" because they do not think about you !!!!!

I have been thinking a lot lately that despite having ridden bikes for getting on for 33 years, there has never been a time I felt more at risk on the road. I think the fact that cars have become so safe has resulted in a lack of concentration by motorists which when coupled with the rise in traffic numbers and general feeling of entitlement most drivers appear to have, has produced a heightened risk to motorcyclists. The stats may say the roads are safer but I believe it is actually a reflection of the improved survivability built into car design these days and not an improvement in driving standards.
I work to live. I live to ride. I ride to work, Ever felt like your going in circles.

Now that's a post with some cobwebs on, from April 2009, where the reference to 'porno' was that Labour MP, who's name I can't recall, being fingered (figuratively speaking) for submitting a claim for porno movies. 2009 being the year of the MP expenses claim scandal.

The mobile social picnic claim still stands.

if you ride around derbyshire its pretty much already in place .....50mph abounds and dozens of local roads and duel carriagways have gone the same way it already happening

i dont know how other guys are getting on but ive been snagged twice this year once local 33 in a 30 ...and the awsome 27hp crf300 with knobbly tyres at 69 in a 60 on the way back from whitby at 0815 am

..if i had a ktm 1190 with road tyres i think id be taking a enforced break just now ....i think the days of speeding and getting away with it are well and truly numbered already ....

I live in Buxton so know exactly where you're coming from regarding silly speed limits in Derbyshire & surrounding areas. Don't mind if it really is for safety but, let's face it, it's more for easy revenue. 50 mph speed limits on most of the roads around here are a total joke. No wonder people are falling asleep at the wheel!

This the main reason for getting rid of my ZZR1400 and keeping my slower bikes, I'd have lost my licence by now..

Having "safety" camera warnings in the GPS, and keeping off the "A" roads as much as possible.

That is one reason for selling my 950SM and now using my 690 as my main road bike. Plenty of fun at less than 70 mph and copes with the awful road surfaces much much better.
The Triumph would pop my eyeballs out at 70!!

I totally agree! I also live in the Peak near Buxton, the answer is B roads, proper old fashioned roads as they should be, no silly limits, no cops and no cameras! Great fun on a middleweight bike.
:D

When they made the Buxton to Ashbourne road a 50mph limit a few years back I am sure it became MORE dangerous with more accidents. The sign says 50 but many drive at 40-45, people get wound up following and overtake in bad places with the resulting mess on the road.

I have to ride the A40 into London and the introduction of the 50mph average speed camera has made it very dangerous for bikers. Quite often you end up in cars blind spots and as everyone is traveling at 52mph no-one is passing one another. Car drivers then change lanes without looking and try and side swipe you. Managing my space is no longer an option as the only way to do that is to continuously slow down but trucks then pressure you to get moving. I hate that road now.
