Try London these days & blanket 20mph speed limits. That's a lot of clutch work

My wife and I used to commute from Surrey into London on our bikes and never really had a problem - we left for 'oop north' in 2003.

Now we hate going down to visit friends and relatives. Not only has the amount of traffic on the roads dramatically increased but they have squeezed more lanes into the available space so it is impossible to filter. I spent years riding round London and consider my heavy traffic riding skills to be very good. This has been proved in Tirana (which we hit at 5pm  ) India and lots of Italian cities  but I find London a PITA.

As far as speed limits go - they seem to change their minds; first they wanted to raise them in line with Europe, now they want to lower them - post brexit they can do what they want

i think the days of speeding and getting away with it are well and truly numbered already ....
Hmm that does depend on the where you live, I can leave my house and do a hundred miles without hitting a single speed camera and probably pass a police car about 4 times a year, but I do have the luxury of choosing my routes

I do feel sorry for anyone who has to commute these days and agree that some of the 50 mph zones are just daft, there are some going into Cardiff that are a joke, everyone just does a sensible speed then slows down for the cameras creating a more dangerous situation than if they didnt have the bloody things there.

East Sussex is flooded with unmarked police cars and bikes so it's very risky business.
I even overtook one (plus the car in front of him) in my TVR a few years ago but got away with it because I dropped straight back to the speed limit and he liked the car. Got a bit of a light hearted lecture though.

We're easy meat! Don't fight back, don't kick or spit at them, and they get money from us! Until I see a camera van at the beginning of a 20 or 30 zone,or a known accident spot, where they are a 'visable' deterrent, and will actually slow traffic to make sure they drive thru at a safe speed,I'll just believe its a big con! :x

I've already seen the "Looking for cameras" effect on the motorway. On the 'Smart' sections, where there are more cameras and they are linked to the, now, mandatory speed limits when there's something going on up ahead, or because of the time of day and possible congestion issues, people speed up between the gantries with the cameras and noticably slow down past the cameras.

In fact, even when there is no reduction to speed and people say that the cameras are not switched on, the reaction when going past the yellow cameras seems to be to slow down...

To me, that means a load of people all watching their speedo and not as much what's going on ahead of them, like they should be doing.

Here in Belgium, all secondairy roads turned to 70 kph beginning this year and 30 or 50 kph in villages. The 30 kph is mainly near schools. BUT this is only in the Flemish part as they moved "mobility" (yes they still call it mobility) from the federal to regional decision making. Sooo riding south the max is 70 untill you see the traffic signs changing language from flemisch to french, and from there on it is still 90  kafka at its best
I hate riding my bike here...best thing you can do is cross the border into France and enjoy a day riding there.

on the new smart motorways that have the Hadecs cameras fitted - these are on permanently
I do enough miles up and down the M1 and see them go off frequently at anyone doing approx over 90 past them even when the matirx signs are not lit.

even if the traffic is light - the matrix sings still light up and say '60' all the way down past Sheffield.
They look to be on a timer and light up bang on 3pm regardless.
