Pat of a letter we got from Dale Vince, founder of wind energy company Ecotricity, on the energy crisis (we are Ecotricity customers). It explains how the UK got into the situation it is in today

"It began with two nuclear power stations not coming out of scheduled maintenance at the end of summer, leaving a shortfall in electricity production. This comes at the same time as the UK had its lowest wind speeds for 60 years, making our wind energy production lower than expected. On top of that, one of the cables that connects our country to Europe to bring power when we need it, burned down. The country then turned to gas to make up the shortfall, as demand and prices rocketed globally, and Russia turned down pipeline supplies by as much as 25%.

"This means Britain is experiencing record high prices for gas and electricity – higher than anywhere in Europe. Eventually – but we don’t know when, all these factors will each return to normal. It could be in the next few weeks, or it could take all winter."

This illustrates the dangers of green windowdressing...it means we don't take responsibility to providing our own power, and buy in fossil fuels from odious dictatorships. There is energy under our feet and in our waters.

Is there a fuel shortage or a logistics problem?

No shortage of refined petroleum product in the UK, but prices of crude are going up globally as demand returns post-covid and Winter draws in.
Shortage of gas across Europe and Asia as the Winters are getting colder and longer, and snow etc falling in areas which don't usually see much of it (Southern Spain, Brazil, Australia).
Also China refused to buy Australian coal because the Australians were disrespectful...which has backfired on them big time...they had to ban central heating south of the Yangtze last Winter :D Which has meant they are now shopping elsewhere for energy.
Distribution of pretty much everything difficult globally thanks to a shortage of shipping and containers....container ships bigger than ever before...more eggs in fewer baskets, plus globalisation sees production concentrated in low-wage economies on the other side of the world from consumer markets.
Shortage of people willing to drive trucks across Europe, but especially in the UK as they get treated like dirt and paid so poorly...which are hopefully being addressed now at least in part with better wages.
Luckily we still have plenty of coal, oil and gas under the UK and surrounding waters.

Another triumph for our 'green energy' strategy.

And we are going to run out of electricity this winter.
