Hard shoulder penality

Post by Dark Knight »

Got fined £100 and 3 points for riding on the hard shoulder today.
Was coming back from the racing at East Fortune and on the M9 close to the Lathallan turn off, traffic had been stop start for ages and could not filter because of a large tesco truck and trailer.
Clutch hand was getting sore and was needing the toilet, close to 300 metre slip road marker, so decided to slip down the inside for the turn off.
Unfortunitly some guy in a white van had turned it over in the outside lane (driver was ok) close to the slip road and the police were in attendance, they stopped me.
It was afair cop because I was inside a solid white line before the junction.
Maybe I should carry a suitable bottle for pressing toilet issues.

Sometimes these things are a bit perverse and maybe unnecessary. Surely a stern chat would have sufficed. Unless you were doing 50.

I was in a massive jam on the M25 some years ago after a bridge jump suicide.
We had been stationary for about 30 minutes and about 6 miles from the incident and the girl in front was obviously cabin crew so presumably trying to call the airline. A idiot bike cop decided to tell her off for using the phone. Jeeez.

Take risks, pay the penalty , lesson learnt I'd say.

We were in stationary traffic due to an accident on the M50 a while back, just short of J3. After half an hour or so a steady stream of cars started going up the hard shoulder, obviously looking to get off at the junction. It took another half an hour to clear the accident and we were on our way - past all of the cars that had gone up the hard shoulder as they were all being processed by the traffic cops.....

Common practise in control rooms now to turn cameras onto off ramps near accidents ...easy money...

I once saw the aftrrmath of a passengrr getting out of car to look and being hit by car... ...not a prettys sight...

The police constable was fine and gave very instructions.
I really think that I got confused where the slip road was as the Tesco truck was blocking my view, when on the hard shoulder I passed the 300 metre sign so must have been about 500 metres from the slip road.
The slip road was clear with no debries, so no significant risk, not sure if the police attend those risk review courses.

A chap that I used to know crossed a solid white line from a slip road to join a motorway earlier than he should have done to blend in with the traffic.

Long and short of it, he went to court instead of accepting the 3 points and fixed penalty fine.
He wanted to explain his thinking....

The question was put to him...”did you cross the solid white line?”

His answer...” yes but the reason I did that was because.....”

He was cut off at that point and asked for a yes or no. “Did you cross the white line?”

Obviously he had so 3 points and a great wr fine.

Nothing to do with risk assessment. Just a simple yes or no.

That sounds like the people who drove a few yards up a bus lane in a jam to get to there office, where they would have had to cross the bus lane anyway.
Too much income at stake to have some common sense and say ok this time but....

The paint is there already, we just have to choose whether to cross it.
