The thorny Issue of Insurance

Hi all
Having resided outside of the UK for the last 12 years (in australia) I now have the problem of looking for insurance that won't require me to sell my vital organs on the black market.

I have owned motorcycles in the UK and Australia since the late 90s and have a pretty good riding history.

I decided to get a quote online for a 2018 BMW R1200 GSA and used a comparing site (the one with the Meerkats) and the best quote I got was over 3000k GBP.....I can get fully comp here in Australia for around $800.

Anyways can any of you guys point me in the direction of a specialist insurer for someone who wants to return to the UK and buy a motorcycle.

Mike

Greetings,

I don't personally know of any specialist insurer nor broker for your circumstances. I can only suggest that you try companies such as;

Bennetts - https://www.bennetts.co.uk
Carol Nash - https://www.carolenash.com/uk-brand/?ut ... New%20Bing
Footman James - https://www.footmanjames.co.uk/classic- ... -insurance
The Bike Insurer - https://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk
Devitt - https://www.devittinsurance.com/motorbike-insurance/

When I returned to the UK from Europe a few years ago Carole Nash allowed me to use my non UK bike insurance no claims record.

They may have subsequently screwed up registering it with the Motor Insurance Bureau, tried to cancel it a couple of years later for alleged non payment (they had the money all the time) and had generally shit customer service but they did do the first year correctly.

Personally I have found Adrian Flux to be ok to work issues like yours out with, I have had bike insurance with them previous and currently have a really oddball Japanese market Camper van insured with them and they where the only place I could find that would even quote, after a bit of a chat I ended up with cheaper insurance than what it would cost me on a 1.2Litre Fiesta!!!, fully comp with all the bells and whistles, been with them 5 years now 8-)

I tend to find Bennetts are really cheap if you have decent history of no claims, fully comp on my GS with again all bells and whistles is under 200 quid and that is living in sh1t hole that is London. But I have seen absurd prices if you are a new rider or new to the UK.

44 Teeth on YouTube have had a lot of banter with the guy that runs "BeMoto", if his sales pitch is anything to go by it may well be worth giving them a call, there is a decent video on there of a discussion where people ask insurance related questions and most came back from him saying "well we do not do it like that, and they certainly shouldn't", it seems as a company they are open to discussion if something out of the ordinary is in place..

My own personal feeling ref insurance is that sadly there seems to be so little competition within the market due to company take overs unlike decades ago. We have a whole generation of younger people that are totally priced off the roads, when I was 19 I had a ZX6r and a GSXR400 and I was easily affording it on typical low wage job. My friends daughter is paying over 4k for a Fiat Punto!!.. But I digress that is for another thread..

:::edit, found video, disclaimer I have no affiliation to them or 44 Teeth

Something I would add if you have not purchased the bike just yet is using Footman James and their "Classic" policy..

Whilst it may not help you as you want a 2018 model, if you can stomach a older bike that is over 15 years (Heaps of decent machines to choose from) you will qualify for classic insurance and I see quotes regularly under 130 quid, it may work for you to get a few years riding out the way to get some history behind you before heading off on a far newer machine. Only thing to look at is what is the situation with No claims as I cannot remember off hand if classic insurance gives a bonus or not?.....
