Just heard on the Beeb that the driver that maimed Paul and killed his work partner has been convicted of death by dangerous driving.

I understand Paul attended court in a wheelchair.
I don't know him personally...only as a member here, but he seems a good man.
I'm not suggesting for a moment that any of us would drive like the guy who has just been convicted, but will say that truck drivers who have been following this case on trucking forums have been discussing the importance of their being able to 'slow down and move over' when passing casualty vehicles on the motorway.
To the rest of us, this may seem like inconsiderate driving: "A bloody great artic pulled out on me into the middle lane then slowed down to 45 mph. Idiot!"
But the reality is they are doing their best to protect vulnerable workers at the roadside. If you can, please give them room to complete this vital manouvre...it's potentially a life-saver. Remember that, perched up in their cabs, they probably have a better idea of what's going on ahead than most: and they do more motorway miles in a week than some of us do in a year.
Lecture over...and if you are offended by it then sorry, but I don't care!

I have been following this case too, not realising it was the one involving Paul. I couldn't believe the arrogance of the driver trying to justify what he did and its one good thing the jury refuse to be impressed.
I ride a lot on motorways and today had a round trip that included about 200 miles of motorway.
Without fail on every journey I see these idiots on phones and texting while driving and here we see the end result. A huge sadness while an idiot tries to make pathetic excuses. For all the speed cameras a few police bikes pulling these guys off the road instead would make a big dent in the accident statistics.
But the other point about leaving space at the hard shoulder is so very valid.
If I see activity on the hard shoulder its a case of pull over to the next lane for me, or if I am out there I will leave space for a vehicle on the inside to pull out. In some cases they will see the gap signal and come out, in other cases a dodo will just pull over into your lane without looking. In fairness to truck drivers if they see you making the space you almost always get a flash of thanks. But car drivers will rarely do it and then we get these consequences.

Modern cars have far too many distractions...including those dash-mounted 'infotainment screens'.
Sadly, bikes seem to be going the same way...far to much to fiddle with when you should be looking where you are going.
The top of the range Ducati has a real-time lean angle indicator FFS...oh, the shame. I remember when the top of the range Ducati didn't even have an electric starter...1978 900SS ... rolling thunder.

Couldn't agree more on the gizmos and gadgets.
Have never owned a satnav and have no iThingies. Kids think I'm deprived but its heavenly. I do have an iRon and that's it!

Interesting vid below shows the strength of air turbulence when a large object moves at speed. I know it's a train but a group of artics passing will have the same effect. The train is going relatively slow compared to the speed of an artic on the motorway so the effect shown is actually reduced.
