I am planning a 3 day ride:
1) Leeds to St Bees via Salter Fell, staying at Borrowdale YHA
2) Borrowdale to East Coast taking in Bainbridge Roman Road and the lovely track just SE of Aysgarth + ??? (it's remarkably diffult to link up a route because all the tracks seem to run north - south).
3) Back to Leeds on B roads.
I would like to do the entire thing without using any A roads, but this looks to be impossible.
I would welcome any suggestions for routes including:
* Off road tracks (abs max level of difficulty like the rocky end of Rudland Rigg)
* Hidden gem minor roads with nice curves and wonderful views
* perfect weather conditions
GPX files are most welcome!!
Cheers,
Dave

It is impossible, you certainly cannot get from St Bees Head across the LDNP without riding an 'A' road at least once.

legal but difficult on a big bike bordering on impossible after bad rainfall, repaired recently but still a challenge

Hmmm, sounds rather challenging, even on my KLX250.
At least the Old Coach Road looks easy, so I will include that.
There seem to be a few lanes around Skelwith Bridge, youtube vids indicate these are rideable.
Any other suggestions???

East to West, yes, piece of cake. West to East, well that has you climbing out of the old quarry, on washed out rocks - so a bit more challenging.Arthur Pint Motor wrote: At least the Old Coach Road looks easy, so I will include that.
There is also a short Lane around Little Mell Fell, and Latrig/Threlkeld.
You can find them all here --> http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transpo ... routes.asp
If it's in that list, it's legal.
Also, don't forget there are many lanes north east of Penrith, again they can all be found in the link above.
For Northumberland, sorry Northumbria, you will fined the off-road trails here -> http://www.northumberland.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=2225
No idea about Durham.

I had already found the Cumbria site - very helpful!Gas_Up_Lets_Go wrote:

I had also included Lanrig and Little Mell, so it looks like I have decent route. Thanks.
Looks like I will be staying at a friend's near Pickering, so my route heads through the Dales (Mallerstang Common, Dodd Fell, Bainbridge Road, Stake Moss, West Witton) then NYM (Kepwick Moor). 152 miles. Should be about 6 hours riding at my pace + 2 hours to get lost
On day 3 I will do loop of the NYM and back to Leeds on (mostly) B roads.
Just hoping for half decent weather.
