What's your budget?

I take it you want a road-legal bike for trails?

looking at a little rough xt225 at £1000 plus another couple of hundred to ship it
that's why I was looking at AliB as in my price range (under £1500) and fairly local
just tipping my toe in the water and will possibly upgrade later

Before you fork out on a bike, check to make sure there are legal lanes and routes for you too dip your toe into trail riding in your area.
I believe you may find it a wee bit difficult in Scotland
