New Member - Operation Rally/Adventure

Post by blackice »

Evening all!

For the past few years I've been toying with the idea of going on an adventure and I am now at a point in my life that if I don't do it soon I'll never do it. I'm by no means a true 'biker' (owned a GSXR600 and KTM Duke 640) or mechanically minded in any way but I'm willing to learn.

I enjoy the great outdoors and with the industry I'm in always up for problem solving.

Having followed these boys https://toughmiles.com/ It is my intention to buy a suitable lightweight donor bike, strip it down and build it into a capable adventure/rally style machine.

I have a fairly limited budget (£5k) for both bike and conversion so no doubt I'll be along for advice regularly!

Thanks in advance and here's to operation LTS.

Welcome.
Do you intend to start off with some "local" warm-up Adventuring or are you just going to hit the road on the big one?

Going to do a couple of UK tours and then France & Italy prior to the big one but got to build the thing first!! Any recommendations on a donor bike? I'm thinking DRZ400 or alike as although I'd love a 690 Enduro my budgets not going to stretch.

Welcome to the forums from an Ulsterman in France. (thumbs) (thumbs)

(I have an XTZ660Z which to date has been durable both on and off road for its designed easy trail use......you can get them cheap enough and standard they do OK...you'll just need to fettle it a bit, thats all.....engine is so far reliable with 78,000kms on it....from your remit it could go onto your shortlist of motos? )
