Brand New Need Advice Please

Post by cburr » Tue Feb 14, 2017 3:05 am

Hi,

Brand new member! I live in Park City Utah and I want to get a motorcycle for myself and my son (19) to do extended trail rides in Utah, Wyoming, Montana etc., Be fun to go for a week at a time camping along the way. We have some riding experience but far from expert-- what type of Motorcycles should we look for. Thanks

Welcome! Sounds like Honda CRF250Ls may be a good choice. I've just got one myself and there is a thread on here about mods you can do to them.

I don't know the Honda well but can say that something of that size wont break the bank, is just ideal, very manageable, go anywhere and if you get a bother by getting stuck somewhere its not too heavy to unstick it yourselves.

Go for it.
1992 K100LT since June 2010 110,000 miles
1984 K100RT since July 2013 36,000 miles now going on 90,000 miles.
1997 K1100LT SE since Oct 2017 59,000 miles now 103,500 miles
1983 K100RS 29,000 since 2019 miles now 36,400 miles and parked in Spain.

Yep. Was so impressed with Minky's bike when I saw it in the flesh that I got one myself and am in the process of minkyfying it - minus the CBR300 engine though!!!

Welcome aboard from Somerset England (thumbs)

Utah, Wyoming, Montana sounds like a lot of land to cover, about the same as England, Wales, Scotland and France! My advise on bikes would be to book some test drives, CRF is a really easy bike to ride and with a sixth gear will sit in the Highway but if you want a bit more grunt you could look at the Suzuki DRZ or DR650. Worth taking into account your own size and if you are carrying camping kit.

Have fun and post us some photos B)
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Yamaha WR250R. Great trail bike.

Might be worth checking out the WR forum that seems to be North America based and not only talks about WR's but also ride reports.
