ABR issue 33 route files - The Shakespeare Way

Post by Bryn »

In the latest issue of Adventure Bike Rider magazine we rode the Shakespeare Way to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. The emphasis of these routes through the UK is on exploring our wonderful and beautiful island by following one of our many long distance footpaths as closely as you can in the saddle of a bike. The 110-mile long Shakespeare Way route is a brilliant one to ride if you want to explore the many nooks and crannys of middle England, down to London, and what better time to ride it than on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

Starting at the front door of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford upon Avon, this route will take you past the home of ABR, Atherstone on Stour, before entering the picturesque Cotswolds. Enjoy the scenery and the winding roads as you make your way to Blenheim Palace (though make sure you stop at Hook Norton Brewery on the way, it's amazing) before navigating your way through the streets of Oxford. From the city famous for its university we ride to the banks of the Thames and then follow it to Burnham Beeches for a bit of quiet time before entering the battleground that is the roads of London. Riding through London is a lot more enjoyable than you'd imagine, though you have to have your wits about you, it's amazing to see so many landmarks and sights in such a short time. Our route ends outside Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Allow yourself a full day, with an early start in Straford upon Avon, to enjoy the route fully.

We've plotted the route out so that you can download it and stick it in your SatNav. Simply right click on the attachment below called 'ABR TomTom route files issue 33 - Shakespeare Way.gpx' and choose 'Save Link As'. Once you've saved it to your computer, load it into your SatNav as per the manufacturer's instructions and get riding! While the route is there to be followed, I implore you to take as many diversions as you wish if you see a road, place, or sight that attracts you!

If you decide to do this run, the Hook Norton Brewery is a must see! Try and get a minute or two with the Roger Hughes the now Semi retired Drayman who still delivers locally with his shire horses. He really has some fascinating stories to tell. B) (thumbs)
