One I stopped at recently on the Portaferry Road, Newtowards, Co Down.
A lovely spot, great views over Strangford Lough.
Nice area to stop a while - could maybe get away with an overnighter here
Directions from Newtownards. Take the Portaferry Road and continue for about 4 miles. Located opposite the main entrance to Mount Stewert Estate

Nendrum Monastery, Mahee Island, Strangford Lough, Co Down.
Stopped here recently, a lovely spot, well maintained with lots of the ancient structures still visible, believed to date back to he 5th century. Great views all round (needed to spot approaching Vikings back in the time i guess!) Picnic table on site

Directions from Comber
Take the A22 (KillinchyRd) out of the town. Just beyond the 40mph limit, take a left unto the Ballydrain Rd. Continue for about 3 miles, then after passing The Old Schoolhouse Inn take a left unto the Ringneill Road, follow to the end, passing Mahee Castle And ending at a layby on the right at the site
Lots of interesting roads in the area that take you along the western shores of Strangford Lough

Good thread this, giving me a few ideas for my upcoming trip to Northern Ireland, 10 day trip taking in the Enniskillen road races while there then after that staying a week at cottage in Ardglass, will be taking Moorso's Valhalla book with me with not been far from Strangford Lough.
Re: Northern Ireland..Places to stop, take in the views.
Greetings,
I had family that lived in Whitehead, to where we used to go on holiday. There used to be a fresh sea water outdoor swimming pool, freezing even in the height of a hot summer. The path to Blackhead and the lighthouse fell into disrepair but I thought that it was to be repaired.
Whilst there I remember visiting the Loughareema vanishing lake just outside of Ballycastle.
If anybody is passing I would be grateful to see a modern photo.
TTFN
Hugh.
