Where are those healing wells please Flintlock? I have never heard tell of them and would like to take a run over for a nosey sometime.
Aiden....there are loads of those sorts of sites (I've written a book about biking and the archaeology around Strangford).

The church at Saul has a mortuary house and healing well:

But the largest is the complex at Struell Wells near Downpatrick (nice roads to get there too!.

Thanks Flintock! B)

If anyone wants a nice route round the area, there's a map below it's a close up of the Southern tip of Strangford)....all the sites of interest (mainly historical) are highlighed.

Its not like I don't want to do the longer run, we go up in September and enjoy the North Antrim coast with Comberjohn and happily do over 200 miles in a day, Last September I did that run then 260 miles back to Cork on the same evening.

This historic sort of run is on my hit list, particularly the coast line around Bangor Warrenpoint Ballyhornan and so on. My work is in conservation too so I will be hunting Moorso's book.

Moorso could lead a very nice historic tour........along with a nice lunch stop somewhere on the way.

Thanks Flintlock and thanks to you too Moorso.

I am interested in curious wee places for two reasons, I enjoy them myself and sometimes submit them for inclusion in the Irish Photographic Rally. Flintlocks report and pictures brought the wells to my attention. I must check them out soon when I get a chance.

92kk k100lt 193214....PM sent with link to download the book as pdf.

An idea would be to head for Struell Wells, then Inch Abbey then to Nendrum via the 'B' (Tullynakill) Road to Mahee Island. Don't think all of us would fit on the Strangford to Portaferry Ferry though!!

Aidan1150...not a problem....can give you loads more info about that part of the world if you need/want it.
I am the same, I love the little interesting stops, and I also love trying to photograph them.

If that ferry is like most of them the time between crossings is probably short enough to use two crossings. I suspect this could in fact be a rather nice outing, a mix of bike and history and a leisurely day. A day of reasonable sunshine this would be what I call a perfect day.

My grandfather was born up that way so I have a connection and as far as I know my great grandfather is buried in Castlewellan.
