Ullapool via perth or Fort William?..what would you do?

Post by Mike101 »

Morning all,

Planning my route for next week and i have two options.

I'm coming up the M6 and M74 to Glasgow..but then which way do i go.

I can go via Sterling, Perth and up the A9

Or i can go via Fort William.

The later router is 30 mins and 4 miles longer than the perth route.

Never having driven either which would you suggest. It will be Friday early afternoon.

Go over the Erskine Bridge then follow the A82. It'll take longer but it's a much nicer ride.

Thats what i'm thinking.

But is it much slower than the A9? I'm already doing 12 hours on my Tenere and i think thats quite enough.

Has to be the A82 every time.

The great road and scenery will have you not noticing the extra time and distance.
Once you've done it you'll do it on the way back too.

How about up one way (A82) as suggested and back via A9. On our recent outing to Scotland we returned via Grantown-on-Spey (off the A9) and. Unto the A939 which was a great road, we ended up in Braemer and headed off towards Loch Tay, however at Breamer you could head south on the A93 to Perth

You might also find that the weather could be more favourable on the east side, as we did so might be worth checking just before you leave

That said you might be s impressed the A82 you will want to go back the same way

I think i'll go up the west side and down the east side. I have a bit more time on the way up but on the way back i need to do it all in a day so i will push on and constant speed will be more important to me than the view.

But the weather could change it all.

Saying that i'm waiting here at work for my heated suit to arrive. So temp will not be an issue but high winds and driving rain might make me think again.
