Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

@halfpint - My original plan was to be out for a month and attend the HISS (big tread version as I think it was then called) after crossing the Pyrenees. However a whole month wasn't feasible in the end so just the Pyrenees this time round for me. @Paul_C - Cheers - definitely up for a beer or two o...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

Riding in Spain A short summary of the things I thought were most important to remember: High vis probably required if you break down on the Autovia/Autopista. Never cross the solid white line and always leave a 1.5m gap when passing cars. Seems like the local Guardia are corrupt enough to work wit...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

I'm not far over the border and if you find yourself in goofy trouble by all means post and I'll try to assist as best I can. I have a moto trailer and there's a BMW dealer about 25mins from me. Thank you very much, I really appreciate that generous offer. Gladly I managed to find mine and the bike...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

From experience I also have an M6 nut/bolt that can act as a spare toe gear shift and I replaced the awkward external star drive bolt that holds the whole gear shift lever on with a regular Allen head. That's a very good point. I snapped a lever at BMW Off Road Skills and we did exactly that to rep...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

Yeah, I guess I'm not so concerned about weight savings when riding around on an elephant, more about space.

I was thinking bivvy for wild camping and tent for camp sites. Could probably sack the bivvy off though.

Re: Klim Dakar Pants - Alternative

I tried out those Thor Range Enduro Waterproof Pants. Pretty good and would be decent in the cold and wet but of course not Klim build quality although not bad for half the price. However, there's not enough ventilation for the hot weather so I'll be returning them. Ended up going to local MX shop a...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

Luggage / Camping The plan is to mostly camp, booking campsites as I go. I’m sure I won’t say no to cheap hotels/hostals/albergues after a long day of riding either. Wild camping is an option particularly if I can’t find a campsite. Wild camping seems fairly illegal/discouraged in Spain (as it is i...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

Bike Mods The bike is an R1200 GS. I’ve made the following mods which I felt were necessary for the trip: Spoked wheels with Michelin Anakee Wild tyres (not fitted in pics). GSEmotion headlight protector. £25 off this forum to help protect a headlight unit that must be at least a few hundred quid. ...

Re: Spain Trans-Pyrenees Sept 2017 - Trip Planning and Ride Report

So bin the UHD tube and get a normal one. Makes sense. I'd be reluctant to carry that monster knowing (hoping) that I'll probably never need it. Where do you guys get tubes from? The thinking with the CO2 bulbs was that they might be helpful to set the bead. It then functions as a hand pump for the ...
