Just done my fd oil change today because I wasn't sure if it was done at the last service. Which lookin at the crap that came out, it wasn't changed. I did a end can a few years ago. It held up fine but it did dull easily. Especially when riden in the rain.
But you can get a clear vht lacquer that should help seal it up.
