It was miles away from a ferry port, but there is a large layby a little further up the road so could have pulled out after a stop and proceeded on the wrong side.

If the engine cranks over when the solenoid poles are crossed then the battery and starter are ok. If the solenoid only clicks when the starter button is pressd, then probably a duff solenoid.

Happy with these, comfy and good if you have a small ear canal. Do not push in too far, as they can be fiddly to remove!
