Been using a Tutoro self acting unit on my KLX250 for two years - does the job and is dead simple. I mainly use the bike for green laning so wanted something I would not be upset about breaking or that could interfere with anything else on the bike (vacuum tubes; wiring etc and they are quite cheap)...

I doubt the instructors will laugh to be fair - I found them to be very reasonable and not at all judgemental. The typical attendee is from a road bike background and not a Moto-cross god - I saw all sorts of kit including leathers (the chap in a ROSPA orange bib which he insisted on wearing all day...

You could do worse than take a look at the TRF (Trail Riders Federation).
