I don't think economy is the new holy grail but it played a fair sized part in my bike buying decision.

I can now do the same miles as I did on my Vara (old carbed version) for almost half of the money.

I did that lane a few times when I had my Vara. Have you tried Hermitage Lane, not the Maidstone one, this one runs up Detling hill parallel with the A249. If you go up the hill it's to the left of the A249, turn left at the bridge, 'Jades Crossing' and it's about 1/4 mile up on your right. And also...
