Why is that then? The bit around the crankcases, fine. The upper part seems to just be protecting the panels on the side of the tank, which are themselves there to protect the tank - they'll take quite a lot of abuse, and are pretty cheap to replace if you did actually manage to trash them properly...

I'm not sure what protective function those actually serve, but they look like they'll be pretty useful for hanging luggage off.

The counterweight would stop the compass trying to point DIRECTLY to North which, when in the southern hemisphere is through the Earth.
