Broadly speaking
progressive springs versus straight rate is something to use if you want to stop bottoming out whilst retaining a reasonably soft initial travel.
All else being equal they are little help for brake dive, in fact quite the opposite, the bloke in the shop was talking bollox.

I understand the attraction Gary, realistically its a trailer to the trail type of bike though which I thought was not your focus. I have an old WR250F I use for that sort of thing and did consider going for something like a KTM freeride but when I weighed up the actual advantages they where minimal...
