We broke down on a busy roundabout and even though we were there for less than 2 minutes glad we had our hi-viz.

Breathalysers are not required.

Re: Royal Enfield Himalayan - The Adventure Begins

Within reason weight for a bike used purely on the road is less important than the balance of the bike. It’s a different matter for a trail bike as you may well need to pick it up on difficult terrain. My most versatile bike is a 1989 BMW R100GS which I’ve owned from nearly new (ex demo, I think). T...

Re: Bulbs in France

Very unlikely you’ll get pulled over for a random check unless you’re doing something stupid which attracts the Gendarmes attention. You need a hi viz gilet, UK sticker and all your papers but otherwise I wouldn’t worry too much.

Re: First time in France on a bike

It not surprising that the inhabitants of areas like the Somme try to forget the horrors and devastation of World War 1. Nobody who was alive at that time is still living but the farmers and builders are still coming across human remains and unexploded ordnance on virtually a daily basis which makes...

Re: First time in France on a bike

Blimey, bit of a flying visit!

If you go again take in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres (every evening at 8pm) and visit the museum.

Re: First time in France on a bike

We used the N - D route extensively when we lived in the UK in the eighties and it was great but a very poor service now it’s run by DFDS. As long as it gets me from one side of the channel to the other and back again, I will be happy with that. I hope to spend most of the outward trip asleep anywa...

Re: First time in France on a bike

We visited some of the WW1 cemeteries in 2015 as my great uncle and one of my wife’s uncles are there (another one is in the cemetery at El Alamein which we visited in 1991). Finding the places can be quite interesting but well worthwhile.

Re: First time in France on a bike

We’ve just returned from a short visit to the UK. We went on the Hook of Holland to Harwich route as we were visiting family in Suffolk but returned Newhaven to Dieppe overnight which was definitely the work experience of the trip. We used the N - D route extensively when we lived in the UK in the e...

Re: Rural France

We’ve been living here in the Dordogne for 30 years now. Went back to England 2 weeks ago (first time since 2015) and now really appreciate where I live. I can see why. But one thing has struck us - there are loads of mainly older houses (and commercial premises too) for sale. And it's so inexpensi...
