Update to above, just had a quick Google around and Vitamin D is now called Sighthound. There's still a free version but not sure what features it has. Definitely worth a shot though

There​ used to be some free pc software called 'Vitamin D' that was pretty comprehensive (you could even get it to email an address if something moves in user defined areas of the screen). Might work if you can run a pc & webcam in your garage.
