First look: Mosko Moto Basilisk IR kit

Mosko Moto Basilisk IR kit

Mosko Moto has gone from a plucky start-up to one of the most recognisable names in adventure motorcycling in recent years, but the American brand has always done things a little differently.

A core focus of the brand is designing adventure gear from a trail riding perspective. This means the luggage is compact and tough as nails, and the kit is lightweight, flexible, and versatile.

In keeping with this design brief, Mosko Moto kit has always followed the principle of using separate armour while riding, instead of integrating it within the clothing.

The idea is that separate, dedicated armour fits your body best, allows the most mobility, and has a better chance of protecting you.

And while I agree with this, especially when it comes to riding in the dirt, the need to wear additional armour with Mosko kit is another layer of faff upon the helmet, gloves, boots, kit, goggles, buff, and anything else you wear when hopping in the saddle.

Simply put, sometimes a spot of convenience is rather nice. And Mosko Moto has recognised this having now released its first line of integrated armour motorcycle gear.

This includes an armoured version of the Basilisk kit, which I’ve long been a fan of.

Let’s take a look at what’s new.

Introducing the Basilisk IR

Mosko Moto Basilisk IR kit

I’ve been wearing the unarmoured version of the Basilisk jacket for over a year, and I have to say, it’s a brilliant piece of kit.

It has proven 100% waterproof while still retaining a high level of breathability, aided by the large and effective vents.

It’s the same story with the Basilisk trousers, which are great at keeping you dry when fording rivers and puddles while on the trail.

Now, both the jacket and the trousers are available as the Basilisk IR kit, which features integrated (but still removable) armour.

Why the shift in Mosko Moto’s philosophy of pairing separate armour with its gear?

Well, a big reason is that motorcycle armour has evolved a lot in recent years, and there’s now armour on the market that offers the level of mobility and adaptability that trail riders demand, alongside high impact protection, that’s able to be better integrated into jackets and trousers.

Rheon armour

This armour is produced by UK-based Rheon Labs, which has developed a highly energy-absorbing polymer that is engineered to be flexible, breathable, and lightweight, while also providing impact protection when you need it.

Paired with Super Fabric abrasion-resistant, ceramic-plated fabric, the Basilisk IR is built for active adventure riding in every climate with a high level of protection, all with the convenience of your standard motorcycle clothing.

Both the jacket and the trousers are CE-A rated for abrasion resistance and CE level 2 for impact protection.
