“I started keeping  track of where I’d been by putting pins in a map of the state,” explains Harley man, Johnson. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve been to a lot of places. I think I’ll go to all of them!'”

Steve’s favourite ride-out destination in Nebraska is the Sandhills, an area of prairie-like terrain in the mid-northern region of the state, and he reckons the most breathtaking scenery in all 77,358 square miles of Nebraska can be found along the Niobrara River. The best burger in NE? Bottom Road Bar in Morse Bluff, he says.

Along his eight-year journey, Steve beat cancer, fell in love and got married; now his wife of three years Linda rides pillion. The pair have a further 100,000 miles to clock up before they can check off the final destination on their epic Nebraskan ride: Monowi. “I’m really excited about it,” says Steve. “All this time it was just something I was doing, this year I’m going to finish it!”

With a population of just one (according to the 2010 census), Monowi in Boyd County is the smallest incorporated town in America. Luckily for the Johnsons, sole resident Elsie Eiler also runs the town’s only pub – the Monowi Tavern. So, not much queueing at the bar  for that celebratory drink then, Steve. Cheers!
