This year’s three-man teams are from The Alps, Canada, Germany, Spain, UK, Japan, USA, South Africa, Scandinavia and Italy. Competitors are chosen by entering one of nine national qualifier rounds held at BMW GS Academies across the world with tests in fitness, mechanical knowledge and riding skills. Only the three most successful riders from each participating nation are competing in next week’s final in South Africa.
Representing the UK are Kevin Hammond, Mark Kinnard and Alistair Allan, who says his goal for the trophy is, “To not get eaten by a lion.” This from a man who’s recovered from two fractured femurs – our money’s definitely on Alistair!
