The new signs were unveiled by Town Hall officials in Hangzhou, eastern China, and show a person using the crossing one side and an ape on the other.

Some residents believe it’s meant to depict an old Chinese proverb: ‘to put a hat on a monkey’. “It means to put a fool in a powerful position – and we have enough of those running the town,” said one resident.

We may never solve the chicken conundrum, but at least we now know why the monkey crossed the road.
