Take a ride from Italy to Switzerland along the Maloja Pass and you’ll find yourself on one of the most picturesque roads in the Alps.
Starting in Chiavenna, Italy, the Maloja Pass is a delight for any travelling biker looking for jaw-dropping views and some of the best riding in the Alps. Smooth curves on the Italian side of the border quickly begin to tighten as the road passes into Switzerland through a series of tight hairpins.
This section of the Maloja Pass is by far the best, as the road writhes its way up an impossibly steep slope, demanding a rider’s full attention before it eventually crests at a heady altitude of 1,815m.
The Maloja Pass is just one of many spectacular mountain roads that feature in the Best Day Rides in the Alps feature which you can read all about on page 57 of this issue of ABR. From balcony roads in France’s Alpine foothills to the sheer granite faces of the Dolomites, they’ve been designed as the perfect way to explore the mountains on two wheels when we can once again head over to the continent.
