It's cold out there, ABR’s! But guess what? We have some great prizes in this week’s online competition that will come in very handy.
R&G, the world leader in motorcycle damage prevention products, has introduced a fully waterproof outdoor bike cover to fit adventure bikes and other large tourers. We have teamed up with R&G to offer one lucky winner the chance to win one of these superb Adventure Outdoor Covers (SRP £49.99) as well as a Deluxe Helmet Bag (£20.49) and a two pairs of R&G Heated Grips (£39.99).
The Adventure Outdoor Cover from the world leader is a reaction to the increasing popularity of this riding sector and plays to the same strengths of R&G’s long-standing and award-winning superbike variant (£42.99).

Shaped to the silhouette of a bike and made from heavy duty material with double stitching, the Adventure Outdoor cover is fully waterproof and won’t scratch bodywork when fitted and removed. It features fully adjustable securing straps, as well as covered security holes fore and aft, for use with locks.

Charley takes on South Africa in new TV show |

With his all-new TV show Charley Boorman’s South African Adventure due to start on Chanel 5 this week, we caught up with the man himself to talk tough terrain, explosions, shark encounters and behind-the-scenes antics
In an interview with ABR before your departure, you said that the aim of your SA trip was to ‘get under the skin of the place’. Do you feel you achieved that?
I really think I did. Last year in Canada, we walked away thinking that there was so much more to Canada than we had imagined; I was hoping for that in South Africa and we got it in bucket loads. People see South Africa as just Cape Town or Johannesburg and they think, ‘Oh Johannesburg is dodgy,’ when it’s not really. When you venture out of those main places there’s so much more. I met a lot of people and we did a lot of funny, silly things.
What else can we expect from your new show?
All sorts, from shark diving to gold mining. We camped out under the stars, went to Robyn Island - where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life, went on safari and saw lions do a kill.

With final scrutineering well underway for the 2013 Dakar, we caught up with Aussie enduro and off-road legend Simon Pavey to talk bikes, bashes and Charley Boorman as he prepares to compete in this year's race
How did you first get into motorcycling?
When I was a kid at high school one of the other kids had a bike and gave me a little go in the field at the end of our street, and that was it. I was hooked straight away.
So what got you into off-roading?
It’s just that whole freedom thing, being able to go where you want, ride where you want, like a little adventure every weekend. Like when I was a kid, disappearing into the sand dunes and ripping around.
What motorcycles do you own now?
I have a BMW HP2 and all my past Dakar bikes, four of them. And, of course, the one I’m using for the 2013 Dakar as well – it’s a Husqvarna TE449.
Which is your favourite to ride and why?
I like the HP2 a lot, because it doesn’t make any sense. It’s not particularly good at anything but it can do a bit of everything; you can ride it on the road and you can do some off-road stuff with it.
What’s your favourite kind of riding?
I definitely have a passion for racing but the reason I like rallies is because they have a nice mix of adventure, going somewhere that you couldn’t go if you were just travelling and also having the support there to just really go for it. But the most fun I have on the bike are the days out with a few mates for a mess around.
How do you train and prepare for a race like the Dakar?
After eight years doing it, I’ve still got no idea! I try to ride as much as possible and stay healthy, it’s easy to end up with a small injury and undo all the good training. I do a bit of cycling and swimming, too.

ABRs familiar with the Pyle brothers’ record-breaking ride around China will be keen to learn that a book charting their 11,184-mile journey around the Middle Kingdom is now available to buy on Amazon.
For those of you not up on the Canadian brothers’ two-wheeled antics, the synopsis goes something like this: In 2010, Colin and Ryan Pyle set out from Shanghai on a 65-day circumnavigation of China’s borderlands on a pair of BMW F 800 GSs.
Their adventure, dubbed the MK Ride, saw them travel through some of China’s most impenetrable and inhospitable parts, tiptoeing the China-Mongolia border, and busting through miles of red tape and close shaves to make the journey happen.

So your motorcycle jacket is waterproof and breathable. Oh Yeah? |

Logical minds could be forgiven for thinking that any fabric described as both 'waterproof and breathable' would be right up there in the premier league of oxymoron’s rather than the base material for motorcycle jackets. However, there are fabrics that are both waterproof and breathable but not in the practical way you may think they are.
And just in case you don't know, a waterproof breathable material is one where the fabric pores are too small for water molecules to pass through yet large enough to let microscopic water vapour molecules escape. The idea being you stay dry through a combination of keeping rain and snow at bay (waterproof) whilst letting any sweat vapour escape (breathable). Getit?
