My other half has just graduated from University, and is now looking for work.
She seems to be under the impression that we can`t go away for a couple of weeks because she will loose her job seekers allowance because she will be out of the country and not looking for work??
That can`t be right??? Can it??
Anyone know?
Thanks

Sounds right to me, you can get away with a holiday within the UK but if you go abroad you can't claim for the period you are away.

Your obviously a law abiding citizen hence the question, so you will never get to know the ways of maximising your DSS claims so like other good people who do not scrouge cheat and lie you will probably get nothing.
Sorry that seems to be the way of this country, maximise the right of idle wasters and minimise the income of the good people who actually work for a living.
I would go to your local office and ask the question and if they say no throw a fit scream and shout about your rights to a holiday, say it's alright for the people behind the counter who have a job and you will not leave until you have everything you want.
I'll stop typing now before I regret what I have said, just F***S ME OFF that when you work for a living you get no help never lift a finger and they can't throw enough at you.

As Spud says , a visit to the DHSSSSS office is on the cards ..
From what i found on google , your other half , signs a form and explains how said holiday is being funded (by you I would suggest) . Then when she returns she would have to resign on (fast resign) or something . If she doesnt inform them she potentially could be charged with fraud.
I have never had any benefits and the rules change often , so best to get the QT from the official dhsssss office.
SO to summarize:
So she would not receive any payments whilst on holiday (that would be crazy).

Sorry to put a spanner in the works but the allowance is for people 'actively seeking ' work. Unless your other half is doing this whilst holidaying why should she be entitled to payment?
On the flipside if she can prove she is looking for work (computor print out etc) in the UK whilst away then that 'may' suffice to get those funds. This still doesn't get a signature in place for those at the desk though.
Best ask/explain with the benefits office.

You have never been entitled to Unemployment Benefit, or Job Seekers Allowance as its called now, if you are on holiday abroad. Even if you are on holiday somewhere in this country, you have to give contact details of where you are staying to the jobcentre.
So you have two choices... A) Tell them you will be abroad and the time you will be away, you will then get your JSA stopped for that period.
Or b, Just don't tell them, but as you have to sign on every two weeks, you may be away on your signing on date. Also if they catch you out, expect it to be considered benefit fraud and your benefits could be stopped permanently, or at least for a considerable amount of time.
My advice is tell them, and lose the two weeks JSA.

And why everyone worries about a couple of weeks on holiday, the big questions are never or not allowed to be asked.
How much money leaves the UK to Foreign nationals with children/or claimed for children for 'child benefit'and the kids have never been to the UK, How many millions per month?

3 generations that have never worked or put into the system, they get the most because they know how to play the system and create the most noise.

This site really is the web equivalent of the daily mail
and no, you're not entitled to job seekers allowance if you're abroad because clearly you're not seeking a job if you're not here.

No, its not clear you are not actively looking for a job when you are abroad. Access to Linkedin and the like doesn't terminate just because you away from home does it?
Haven't the benefits people heard of the internet and emails?

You have to make yourself available for interview and to be able to start work immediately. You can conceivably do this if you are taking a holiday in the UK, if you are abroad the DSS take the view that you have made yourself unavailable.

If you are gullible enough to believe then Daily Mail's figure of £2.1b then it works out at about 30 quid each. Well below my personal 'give a s**t' threshold.

Remember if there's a system, some people will exploit it, same with tax avoidance, whats worse. A lot of people fiddling a little or a few people fiddling a lot..
