TOPIC: Hotel puzzle

Hotel puzzle 10 months, 3 weeks ago #146202

Three bikers were on a trip. They were tired and needed a place to stay for the night. One of the hotels they passed was offering £30 a night for one room. They thought that it would be wise to split the £30 and stay together.
They each paid the manager £10 a piece and headed up to their room. Moments later, the manager realized that the hotel had a special for ABR members of £25 a room, so he sent his assistant up with a £5 rebate all in £1 coins.
Once one of them answered the door, the assistant realized that he couldn’t split the £1 coins evenly among the three and started to head back down to get change. They stopped him and said, “How about you give us each £1, leaving yourself a £2 tip?” After thanking them, the assistant went on with his business, £2 richer.
They returned to their beds and were happy to only pay £9 each instead of £10.

And this is where it got me. There was £30 in play. They paid £10 a piece and got £1 a piece back… leaving the assistant £2.
3 x 9 = 27, add 2 from the assistant and you have = 29.
Where did the £1 go?

They paid 3 x 9 = 27
The room was 25 + 2 tip = 27.
Simples

We're not really wired to think logically. Not you - all of us
£30 for three reduced to £25 = £5 change

so they actually paid £25 / 3 = £8.333333 each

Yep £1 rebate each now equals £8.333333 + £1 = £9.333333 x 3 = £28

Therefore the hapyy chappy does indeed get his £2 tip.

morph's right.

they paid a tenner each initially = 30 quid.

the guy took 5 quid in one pound coins (to make the room 25 quid) to them and he gave each of them one, and was given two himself = 5 quid.

the room cost (£25 plus £2 tip) was therefore 27 quid and they each got a quid back from their tenner each (the original 30 quid) so each guy was left paying 9 quid.

If I got a bed on tour for a tenner, I wouldn't be arguing about the odd quid

I want to know where it is so I can book a night

This ABR thing is sure getting around if folks are doing Hotel discounts now. What next, a beanie or a cover to put the precious mags in

If each guy paid 9 then 9x3 is 27. 30-27 is 3 ... see above ?

30 - 27 is irrelevant.

40 - 27 is 13, go figure...

30- 2 tip is 28. Ur rite 27 is irrlevant thats my point. Its 25 /3
Plus 3 back shared 1 each to get 28 plus 2 for matey boy. Ie it cost them 28/3 each and not 9 each. Which is what the original poster asked. Next time ill draw a piccy

context of the original £30:
Each man has £1
The assistant has £2.
the hotel has £25.
Total £1 x 3 = £3
2+25+30 - look at who has what, not the calculation itself, because it's impossible. there is no missing pound.

the "magic" involved is the reason that accountants dont mix income with expenditure. it's mathematically impossible to prove and you have to therefore look at who has what amount, not the expense and the income. make sense?

I kno theres no missing money thats wot my calcs prove, contrary to the original posters missing pound. Its the phrasing or logic in the q that was flawed, intentionally i mite add.

Each has paid £9 for the room and 33% of the £2 tip, 66p.

Each biker has shelled out £9.66

£9 each to the hotel and 66p each to the assistant, what is there not to understand?
