If you have spare hour an interesting commentary on food history, certainly made me think.

It might only be on the Iplayer for 7 days.

Never enough time and so much to see and experience.

The food industry wants to make a profit but they do not force feed people, to many calories in not enough calories out you get fat simple. Don't want to be fat then don't eat the food. cheers Spud

It costs more to be thin than it does to be fat these days.

"if you don't want to be fat then don't eat the food" is generally said by naturally thin people, who can eat what they like without gaining weight.

I used to be one of those people, and now I am a fatty struggling to not eat the food.
Its harder than any addiction Ive ever faced including smoking and prescription Tramadol.

The programme made some good points about "corn syrup" which is worse than suger, cheaper to make and is in everything near enough. I can't remember if it was that programme or another but there is a problem with people who drink "sports" drinks when not doing sports, ie at the desk etc mainly because they think they are healthy drinks. It may be simple for us skinny barstewards to "preach" but for the last 12 years I have been trying to explain to people how to keep slim(er) and a lot of it boils down to how much they eat and how much energy they expend, the average runner only burns about 2500 calories when doing a marathon. Most people under estimate how much food they are eating and over estimate how many calories they are burning.
There was two morbibly obese people training in the gym where I worked I noticed every workout they did they drank a "sports" drink and at the end of the workout they had a recovery drink before going home to eat their tea. They had been told by the gym owner that is what they had to do when they trained, I explain to them he was maximising his profit base by selling them drinks they did not require and then did some math's with them, they were expending about 150 calories a workout and putting in about 500 so they were actually getting fatter week by week just training at the gym.
eat less highly process food that's a good start, cheers Spud

The post, was just about people understanding what the food industry is doing to the world. There were over weight people (the rich) long before there was a food industry (as we now understand it) and long before there was processed food. Because they were rich they were able to eat more than was needed and didn't do physical work.

You eat and drink more than you need you will become over weight, if you lead a sedentary life style it will be worse.

It is just that much of the food produced now (processed food and drinks) are much worse and some of the ingredients also train and encourage you to eat more than your body needs. The calorie content of processed food is huge.

Watch the programme, knowledge is power, informed choices etc.

Then again don't, I just thought the programme was interesting.

Ps Spud's point is exactly right, eat more drink more, supersize and two for one are all part of the profit margin.

There's another program on in this series on thursday night about the fast food industry as well, i'm sure that will also be quite be interesting.

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of petrol on the bike before i can think straight again.

Soft drinks companies stated that sweet things sell, so they made them sweeter to sell more and they found that if they super size meals people buy more not less. The body is designed for the cavemen days when you had to work hard for food and feast and famine was regular. So during times of feast the body will save as much energy (fat) as it can because surely there's a famine around the corner.
That is why most diets don't work because people "diet" which the body eqautes to a famine, they hit their ideal weight and go back to eating normally and the body thinks "feast" and stores as much energy it can, hence the phrase yo yo diets
But of course for most in the western world there is never any true famines so for most we are screwed and the food industry moguls keep making a huge profit.
we keep getting "fat is bad for you" mantra rammed down our throats but very little is said about "corn syrup"

10,000 years is not long enough to to evolve so we can live well on junk food. cheers Spud

+1

I was brought up with the view that a little of what you fancy does you good and try and avoid processed food were every possible. Discovering why they use modified maize starch in yoghurt was the final straw.

Its all about profit (theirs not ours)
