Years ago I took both front off to service them. Put them in a bag in the garage to come back to the next week.

But next week nowhere to be found.

It took my dad nearly 15 years to own up to throwing them away as rubbish.

That cost me £560 to get a new set.

So doing home mechanics is also expensive.

About 20 miles later, I could feel a substantial clunking sound from the front which was getting progressively worse, so decided to stop and have a look..................

This is what I saw

The left brake caliper had detached itself from the fork leg.

I was 15 miles from home when I discovered this major F*^K UP on my part. Things could have went so very, very wrong.

Anyway,a wee bit of improvisation to get me home. Into my emergency pack, were I keep a few things and out came several cable ties. Limped home at a snails pace without using the front brake...

I had replaced the front brake pads a week or so back and had obviously put the thing together and never tightened the caliper bolts, the right side was hand tight DOH!!!

I have always replaced pads myself witout any issue until now..

Maybe its an age thing

Note to self.......Double check the next time]]>

Cut a piece about the right length, "mushroom" one end by holding near a flame and cut the other end to a point. Push the mushroomed end into the clear plastic pipe that will attached to your swing arm/axle bolt/chainguard or wherever and adjust so it will drip onto the chain in the right place. If it needs a permenant bend hold close to a flame to warm it, bend to shape and leave to cool.

To make a delivery pipe for the dual scotoiler bend a length of delivery tube into a sharp U shape and warm as before. Hold it in this shape until cool and it holds. Cut in the middle of the U and cut again to length. Mushroom each end as before and fit.

start with the usual suspects and work your way from battery to fuse box all the way to the ignition along the main power supply. check evey connection along the way and any place where wires bend around something, check the wires going to the back of the ignition jiggle them around. you might also have a wire grounding somewhere,

with engine off, but key on, try running a wire from the live connection on the battery straight to the live wire going to the back of the ignition and see if the ignition light comes on, you will know if the problem is either with the ingition or a bad live wire connection or broken live wire feed then, you can also do the same with the negative wire, negative to negative, but be carefull here as you might fry something if you dont know what you are doing, maybe its better to leave that for the experts,.

you can also run a bit of wire from the earth at the back of the ingition to the frame of the bike to see if it is a grounding problem, but we are getting ahead of ourselves here. check the usual supects first.

now you must understand that i am no expert, i learned everthing myself over the years you see, but their is experts on here that can give you better advise than me, but i will do what i can,

EDIT

sorry lad, i deleted that bit about the ignition wires, as it might only help someone who read it to steal a bike.]]>

Costs a bit but even after breaking three chains amd rivetting the new ones still looks brand new.

All rivet heads are replacable as well which you never get with the cheaper ones.

However nothing like this exists for the 225 straight off the shelf (I've looked into it in depth for my own Serow). Basically, almost everyone on the Serow forum get frames made & there are photo's of what has been done on the forum.

There is also a Serow thread on the ADV forum too with lots of modification photo's (predominently by US owners).

I spoke to Gabe (of Zen) at the HU event. He's more than willing to make frames up but needs the bike to measure up. He's quite a distance from me though

I visited a guy in north Wales who makes panniers & frames for GS's but for you, he's even further than Gabe from Surrey. Just haven't had the time to take my bike there.

anyway, try doing this it works on stuck bolts sometimes, spray wd40 on it and let sit for while, let it soak in, do this a few times, now put your wrench on the bolt and try to twist it back and foward, it wont move at first. but all you need is to get one bit of a turn, any bit at all will do,

now, dont hang off the bolt because you might only snap it off, keep putting the penetrating oil on it and letting it soak in, you must let the oil soak in, the oil needs to get down to the treads you see, keep trying to twist the bolt back and forward and it should come in the end.

this might take a bit of time, maybe a day or two, so dont rush it

also, if you do get a small bit of a turn in the bolt, dont try to use force to open it the rest of the way, keep putting the oil on it and twisting it back and forward and it will come a little bit each time until it frees up,

if you cant get any twist on the bolt at all , try putting you wrench on the bolt and give the wrench a few taps of a hammer to open it, this will shock the bolt you see, and it might twist a bit then, but be carefull as you dont want do snap off the bolt,]]>

Would you reckon a steel fabricator or a bike garage would be best? Those I've asked were pretty vague about how long it would take & hence price.

I visited Jono over at Adventure Bike Warehouse and Jono changed my front sprocket, but when It cam to adjust the rear wheel the bolt on the right hand side of the swing arm was seized. Jono use penetrating fluid and heat, but no joy. I now need someone to sort this out. Does anyone know of anyone in the Leeds area that could handle this.

I've just done an elaborate 13 minute video of the HISS last month only to find that youtube only accepts vids of ten minutes or less (so, how do other folks manage to load whole films!).

I spent a lot of time on this and although it would split into two parts quite well as a video the editing side of this on iMovie will be a real pain as I thin I would have to delete part 2 and start over as a new project!

Does anyone know about other options - the file is 311 MBs.

It looks like the F800GS Adventure will go down to a height of 860mm with the lowered seat while the standard F800GS is 820mm with the lowered seat option. I'd like to try the Adventure model with the lowered seat to see how it feels, it a great looking bike. Will try this and know what you mean about brake. A lot less effective than on my main bike.]]>

Also, what player are you using. Give something like VLC a go.

Other things. Laptops often share their video memory with the main memory. If you have a lot of apps running in the task bar, try closing them. You can also sometimes increase the amount of video memory in the bios.

As redbikejohn says, try some smaller files. Worth trying 720 and also 1080 shorter video files.]]>

It helped that Robbie would always talk on the phone and offer free advise to anyone who ask. What didn't help is he used to only deal in cash or cheques but after I'd had a few parts from him he used to send things straight away rather than wait for a cheque to arrive then clear through the bank.]]>

while youre at it check the earth too, some people renovate their frames/engines and paint over the earth points

put the CDI box (under the seat at the back where muck from the wheel can get to it) in a poly bag and seal it up well
