Rough Road Tyres, what does this mean? 11 months, 3 weeks ago #139798

Hi All

I'm new to off roading & see "Rough Road Tyres" mentioned quite a bit when meets & runs are advertised.

Do "cats paw" tyres qualify?

I've fitted Heidenau K60s front & back but do intend to buy a road legal knobbly front to switch to for off road excurtions.

Just after a bit of clarification.

Heidenau will be good

For more aggressive 'knobbliest' try Pirelli MT21 which are road legal

They are may favourite tyre and will cope with most surfaces but the front is not that good in mud

Last Pyrenees trip I used TKC80s but Stan had a TKC80 front and a K60 rear

what he said... rode a lot with the k60 rear and mt21 front, good combination except for the strange wear you get on the mt21... tkc front and k60 rear will do you pretty well for road work as well...

Or one of these. I'v got one a KTM 990 and cope quite well on trails and road.
Not for heavy mud, but you get good miles out of one tyre.

Only seen them for sale on this web site:

http://www.zenoverland.com/tyres_tubes/mefo_s_explorer.html

You can get away with most tyres in the dry, but when you hit mud thats a different story.
Hope that helps

Thanks NDC

That & your bike tag line help

I wasn't really looking for recommendations, just a definition of what a rough road tyre is & is there a new jargon for me to learn

ie. I'd call your mefo a cats paw & V_Kings mitas a road legal knobbly.

I was reading your Peaks the Easy Way thread, which got me wondering if my k60s would be enough or if you meant something more aggresive
(wish I could come but have a mates 60th the night before so will be hungover, drunk or still drinking when you set off)

Thanks for the replies
