tink and myself will be going up the west coast of scotland on friday,
we will be both heading up north on our bikes, hopefully early on friday morning, we are neighbors, and will be setting off from thirsk, north yorkshire. we have no real set itinerary, and we will be geared up for wild camping, i think we have up to 10 or 11 days or more to tour about,
although i said we have no real plans, we had a rough plan of

friday, thirsk to glencoe, set up camp then have a ride about, around the area.
saturday glencoe to apple cross,
sunday loop road out of apple cross up towards ullapool,

then after this wherever the road takes us really, ???? maybe take a ferry to some of the islands, ???
if your up there at this time it might be nice to have a meet up, and a ride about.

if anyone had any tips, on places to visit while were up there, it would be good to hear from you.

So many places up there to see.. If you have the time:

From Ullapool - consider a run to Achiltibuie to see the Summer Isles

If you're thinking of travelling from Ullapool to Stornaway - you can travel down through all the Outer Hebrides to Barra and get ferry back to Oban with a Hopscotch ticket. Fantastic beaches along some of the coastline. On the island of South Uist - camp near the Pollachar Inn as you'll get a great meal there, or wild camp on the coast. If you reach Barra - cross the causeway and go wild camping on the island of Vatersay at this location:

On Barra - you see the plane from Glasgow landing on the beach.
contact www.calmac.co.uk for best deals on island hopping tickets and timetables.

My suggested route to Glen Coe taking in the fast sweeping bends of military road to Faslane, the winding bumpy road to Arrochar, the picturesque village of Inveraray and some brilliant wild camping sites on the Glen Orchy road before you get to Glen Coe.

Top tips from sidhartha (+1) about CalMac, the Hopscotch tickets for the Isles are quite cheap for bikes.

Possibility, turn left at Fort William and catch the hourly ferry to Skye from Mallaig ?- Only takes 1/2hr (last one runs about 6pm) I always feel like it's a real holiday when yur on a ferry Cuts out a few miles over the bridge which is anice run and you could always come back that way too, or the other way round.

Achmelvich, Achmelvich, Achmelvich. Camp near the beach, stop in the Youth Hostel, Google earth has some brill piccies.

Ullapool is nice and has a big campsite near te Ferry terminal as does Uig on Skye.

So many places, too little time. No matter where you end up enjoy, take lots of photo's and remember to go back to all the places you either liked or missed off this time. Have fun and let us know how you get on. Cheers Mul

Was up there last week and in the Glen Coe area there is a 14 mile dead end road through Glen Etive. It had numerous spots for wild camping next to a river. The Isle of Mull is well worth a visit especially the West coast.
Have a great time.

cheers paulessexbiker,

I went down that road last year, and camped, it was a fantastic place to camp, the river was good for swimming in, there was plenty of firewood, and we had red deer, all around us, we did go right down to the very end, but then came back, as we thought it was better near that big house, hunting lodge ? which is on the left as you go down the glen i think its called dalness.

Lochgoilhead, just north of Arrochar.
Chaos is the only camoflage that incompetence needs to operate at full capacity.

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of petrol on the bike before i can think straight again.

Hope that you get good weather, what we need for the Sat Nav is an attachment that follows the sun and plots a course.
Was out a run last Monday, up through Glen Coe, past Ballachulish, Castle Stalker and back round by the Connel Bridge, weather was brilliant.
If you are up at Ullapool, head up past Knockan Crag, past Kylesku and head up to Durness, single track roads, brilliant scenery.

Fantastic place! The views on the road leading to Applecross are wonderful, so try to choose a day with good visibilty. Nice food and drink on offer at the pub when you get there.
Further South but still on the West coast,if you like to get off the beaten track, the Arnamurchan peninsula and the Loch Shiel areas are good locations too, just be aware that some roads are really narrow and slow going.

Enjoy your trip!

I would second Mull and hop over to Iona.
