TOPIC: White Van Near Miss

White Van Near Miss 2 years, 3 months ago #20205

First time out with a new helmet camera and saddo that I am thought I would use it on the run in to work to test it out.
Normally in Doncaster the white van drivers are potential bikers and shift over but sadly this one isn't going to cut it.

Initially the duel carriageway is a 50mph and then slows to 40 due to the many junctions that come into it. I had spotted both the parked car on the left and the car coming into the junction quite quick but he was going to go right.
The white van driver isn't looking into the mirror infact he is talking to someone in the van. At least he used his indicators!!!!!!! as I pulled up to the side of him on came the indicator!
It takes a while to find the horn on a bike doesn't it!

Clear case of driving with undue care and attention for other road users, worth a few points and a fine. The outcome of that could have been a lot worse mate. I'm glad you're ok.

Glad you had somewhere to go mate. You'd been in that lane so long there's no way he shouldn't have spotted your approach.

this is classic evidence to James691 post on the topic "Do bikers make better drivers".....
there was no need for the van driver to change lane, and by the way AckAck i'm glad you survived unscathed to tell the tale.... but on viewing the video it is quite clear to us bikers that you displayed that "6th sense" type awareness that us bikers develop or are blessed with.

by the way what camera were you using?....... i think I may invest in one, because I think as a bike rider that has video evidence available to them during an accident and subsequent claim might be a good thing.

It's something we see on a daily basis, I'm sure we all have plenty of these tales to tell.
Glad you came out the other side intact mate.
Nice to have it on video, much easier to make others understand what we have to face.

Good to see that the camera clearly picks up registration numbers as well.

Yes it does 'name and shame'
The camera is pretty good. I got it more for offroad and at the price I thought it was good as I may break it in a spill.

I know someone on the XRV forum that had bought one and put up a vid.
It's easy to use but the mic needs thinking about from a position point of view.

Don't worry forum users I won't be bombarding it with clips of rank drivers but just couldn't believe the van moving.

That's shocking it looks like he was making a last second dive for the right turn! Lucky you got on the horn, or I think it would have ended quite differently.

Bleeding hell that was close. If you had been going much quicker then the result would'nt bare thinking about.

Cheers

There are possibly three things going on in the vid.
1) Plain didn't see you. This used to be the most common type of near miss, but is slowly dropping down the hit parade. (see what I did there)
2) Might is right, This tactic is apparently taught to London Bus drivers and seems to have been adopted by every Nazi who gets behind the wheel, in a cascading effect.
The Bus or Lorry, cuts in front of a van, the van cuts the car and they all cut the two wheeled user, or any user who is smaller or more vulnerable to themselves.
3) I've signalled so I will, I've noticed this becoming more common, Indicator on manoeuvre.
What these people are is either extremely arrogant or stupid, they believe that because the indicator is on it's a right of way for them, NOT an indication of their intentions.
This last group will always try and fit into a magic gap that is initially a bit small for their requirements, but when squeezing in the magic happens and the gap becomes larger.
Their audience are very appreciative of this, and applaud by flashing their lights or sounding their horns.
At the risk of having an elderly female relative becoming a hoover moment, Treat yourself as invisible and other road users as idiots.
When you see an "indicator" start making concious preparations to avoid impending doom.
Life is one big banana skin, sometimes when we slip we hit our butts on the hard floor of life, and on others it's a feather mattress; the adventure is the free fall in between.

I drive a 3.5 ton white van every day, I do drive "assertively" not aggressively, very sublte difference there.
I very rarely get taken by surprise as mirrors are checked frequently.
But there are blind spots, as we all should know.

The ones I'm wary of are two or more people having a conversation, or those on bliddy mobile phones, these are the ones that react suddenly, as in the case of the van in video.

We should practice the art of looking ahead, not just the vehicle in front as so many seem to do.

My pet hate are the "flashers" at junctions, cause far too many incidents.

Re: White Van Near Miss 2 years, 3 months ago #20255

ill go with treadtrader on this one

poor mirror awarness by the driver coupled with the bike being right in the blindspot at the point of moving ..we will never know but id wager he glanced in the mirror before moving

im going to stick me neck out a little here from a profesional point of view .. dia advanced trainer /examiner [whoo]

i know this is all very good in hindsight but this is how i would see it following a trainee in that road
id be looking for defensive riding
defined as what i can see ..what i cant see ..what i may reasonbly expect to happen

what i can see early is the junction with the yellow van and the parked car beyond

what i cant see [ no glass] is the diver of the transit
wheather the parked car has a driver [will it move ..will the door open ]

what may i reasonably expect to happen ?
is there anything there that may cause the white van to alter position or speed ??

again from a defensive point of view .. i think the timing of the pass was poorly timed .. based on what i could see couldnt see and reasonbly expect to happen ..they should never meet traffic travelling in the same direction at a juction

im being honest here .. i wouildnt have allowed a tranee into that space at that time
hold a gap on a steady throttle and move through after the juction

as i say its not your fault at all but the combination of the factors discussed and the blind spot of the van conpired against you

sorry to sound so posh and that but im trying to put a slant on it based on roadcraft ..
hes a dozy fekker isnt in there im afraid
whats the wether forcast ..wheres me map

Ooh Gary!

Can't disagree the eejit in the van was distracted and never once noticed you there or assumed you weren't making progress.

As Minkyhead says though, defensive riding.

First thing I noticed was the orange/yellow van approach the side road at a quick pace...I was expecting the van to move over before you pulled alongside which was before he did. He clearly wasn't paying attention to much at all and reacted without mirrors etc.

Defensive riding first, side road made me react and I wouldntve passed, secondly, if your gonna pass, pass, grab a handfull and get by before any obstacles or else sit back. It's the issue of, if you can't see him he can't see you, or won't.

We all get these daily and when trying to make progress you inevitably come across them, giving way to all of them would mean not making progress, so either back off and don't try, or 'make' progress and pass as soon as you can.

On my commute, I give up and leave 5min early, chillaxe!

Best thing is, you can learn brilliantly cuz you had a great video to get honest feedback from.

Thankfully you lived to learn from this one. Part of life.

One thing though....when you pulled alongside I couldn't see what finger you held up...or was it a gun!?
