Not a great idea when you've got a tent strapped on the back for a weekend away...
But it looks a lovely bike, shame it has a 890m seat height. I need 800 for comfort
Enjoy!

a tent ?? omg are you stark raving mad ?? jesus strewth all campers should be shot
belive me this is a moped compared to the currant crop of bikes ..think crf250 and you wont be far wrong with seat height 881mml for the crf
the next step is a serrow ithink ..so its small dont forget it sags too speccially with my fat ass on it

its maginal at my age but ... reakon i have just enough strength left to lift a dry bag once every 250 miles
the balls of the job is riding and reliability ...no comment as yet

here is my latest ...only camping shot xt660 trail weekend
it was against all my principals with a pub just 1 mile away least i know what a i pod is now 40quid for this ...you have to be kiddin me
or 15 quid to pitch a crisp packet in the rain oh the joy ...mmmm or 45 quid for nice on suite room with breakfast in the pub ....grrr

and a video of the frame construction

ive seen a frame in the nude so tospeak i did mention it ealier it looks like a work of art was what i said
it reasured me at the time that a genuine big effort has gone into the bike .one of the main reasons i bought it .... all the cycle parts really do look great quality ..

i keep telling meself ive done the right thing .im happy with it that now and looking forward ..it really is in one bike class at the moment

i really hope it turns out as good as it looks .. if this bike holds up as reliable i think they will change the game and others will follow

anyway here it is .. ive never seen anything quite like it before
it looks hollow inplaces ..apparantly the moto x bike had no failures

and i aint planning on jumping more than 6 inches so it should be ok

Seen a few others recommend Mobil 1 but what weight for the gearbox. I'm guessing it's not the 2t stuff you mix with the fuel. But thought I'd ask the stupid question to be safe

Checked the manual but that says 10w40 but the Mobil 1 stuff seems to be 15w50 the Motorex stuff recommended also seems to be 15w50. I'm guessing a decent grade of either changed every 2 or 3 rides won't hurt it.

The stuff I'm putting in the ten ain't cheap and is 10w40. I can't remember the make.]]>

I'm guessing you mean gearbox oil? Just use what KTM tell you to use and you'll be fine. If you mean the 2-stroke oil you mix with the petrol you're always best sticking to what the previous owner was using or (again) go for whatever KTM suggest. I'm paying £13l for fully synthetic 2-stroke but the bike doesn't get horribly sooty and need the exhaust de-coking so it's a bargain.]]>

Commuted, toured on all of them, longest trip being a 10 day 3000 mile Euro trip on the Burgman, very accomplished comfortable tourer.
IMHO touring wise the Burgman is king, followed by the Silverwing and then the sporty Tmax.
My thoughts :
The trio all have stupidly short service intervals approx 3000 miles, admittedly only an oil change with major items at longer intervals. New BMW C600 and 650 scoots have longer service intervals (6k I think).
The Silverwing fuel consumption (range) can be horrendous 35mpg if loaded and “making progress”. Burgman averaged 52mpg on the 3k tour.
Burgman has useful Power mode button to give a bit of extra oomph when needed, also manual shift thumb buttons. I used the latter once!!!!!!!!!!
For me over distance the forward foot position can become uncomfortable.
I think the Burgman 400 might make a better all-rounder maxiscoot, but I’ve never ridden one.
Tmax my fave, sporty ride and tours Ok with a little thought.
These bikes (technology) have all been around a looooong time. CVT hasn’t progressed especially considering Honda’s DCT alternative.

Maybe not an "only" bike but would love to have one as a "extra" in the Garage, actually that's not true i'd rather have a Scrambler in the garage, I do like the look.

But if taking one off road, it is strictly a road bike with a high level exhaust (and possibly knobbly tyres) but then again I once went green laning on a Honda CD175 on road tyres and never got stuck, had a grin from ear to ear though

Regarding the arrow pipes, they come in two versions "Street" and "Race". I've ridden a couple of loan bikes (Speed Triple and Tiger 800) with Street versions and they sound no different to a stock exhaust (just lighter and better looking). However I had a Race can on my Tiger and although it made a glorious sound it was just a bit too LOUD. I was at a Triumph dealer recently when they fired up a Thruxton Bonnie with an Arrow Race pipe on it, Oh My God it made the one I had on the Tiger sound whisper quiet by comparison, I thought my ears were going to start bleeding!!!

I guess it's the lumpier power pulses of the twin over the smoothness of the triple that made the difference.]]>

Too true, I'm sure the Scrambler is more capable off-tarmac than I am. And I know I ride for the enjoyment, and a bike like the Triumph would bring a smile to my face just looking at it. Throw a roll bag on the back and head out for the weekend, it might not be the world's greatest adventure but it would lift my spirit when the daily grind is getting me down.

At the end of the week out come the scrambler ready to go back to the shop it was hissing down as I left my garage and within a mile I love the Scrambler and really regretted not using the thing all week.

I found it a very interesting ride and had a great laugh on it, so why did I hate it at the beginning of the week. Well I had just gotten of a 955, the scram felt like a underpowered mountain bike in comparision (sp) and really small when I first got on it. But it has a decent enough engine perhaps not with the same amount of character as a triple or the power. It was comfortable and I should of ridden it more.

Should I ever be in the position to get a second bike I would not hesitate to buy one. It would soon become a desert sled

Not planning on a RTW trip ...........the evil money thing !!!!

Anyway want to do either The West coast of Africa or the Stans in spring 2014, so went out and bought a 2010 Yamaha XTZ660 as from what iv'e red these seem to fit my bill.

I also own a 1996 DR650 that i've put over 28k kms on in 19 months, Morocco/Pyrenees and loads of local off roading.

Don't get me wrong "everyones differant" but i reckon the XTZ will be up for sale !!!

Great bike but there's no way i could fix half of it and it's 30kilos heavier !!!!

That is beautiful!

I accept there is a weight penalty woth these bikes but how good are they on the trails? They certainly look like they could do wth a bit more suspension travel.

I love the idea of a simple, tough & reliable air-cooled twin and if the Scram, the V7 or (ulp) the Sportster had a better set-up for me (on/off road), I'd be in there.

Hmmmm....where is the bike trail bike with the looks of the Scram, the weight of the V7 and the simplicity of the Sportster ?

good progress at 60mph /70mph and ease of use on tracks at 65mpg appeals to me
im not in any hurry ..

i used to be fast boy once ...100mph motorway stuff is ..a waste of petrol time and brainpower ...almost certainly opffset by fatuige concentration ..frustration ..[these slow bartsards pottering at 85 blocking my way kind of thing  ..concern of tyre wear ,and pain in ass expensive petrol stops .a feeling of paranoia and a risk to the wallet and licence ...you really dont gain time and if you do ..you see infinatly less ..you may ride hard for 8 hours a day and enjoy the buzz ..and why not

To an unknowing:-
Who looks like the real exploorer:-
A) Rukka Clad & riding a 1200 Adventourer with shiny luggage
....or....
Cammo Clad riding a 350 Whats it's F***ing name with canvas bags & a folding shovel.

It's all about what makes you feel good, look good & oozing credibility.

It's funny how whenever I meet a distant aquaintance who starts off, "I never knew you were a biker" & then quickly moves to their friend in America who "Rides a Harley Davidson" with a big smirk on their face as if it's a bigger name drop than knowing Steve McQueen.
When they say what do you ride I reply "A Bagasaki" which, surprise surprise they've "Never heard of".
I quickly yawn & assure them that I'm late for an appointment.]]>

So then. Its comming up to the time for me to get my 47 bhp bike, BUT im not quiet sure what to go for, The reason for this is because im after a bike that can a) Commute quite nicely and do some long distance road riding, and b) can also offroad a fair bit (green laning ect).

Im not too worried about top speed, but id like something that can still cruise at 70 if needed and its still reliable, So far ive looked at a KTM 690 enduro, and an XT 660 x/r.

I should also say money isnt really a problem, so anyway. PLEASE HELP ME!

Thanks,

Yaz.]]>

Moste people use small bikes from 90-400ccm, but some also use F800GS, R1200GS / 1150GS / 1100GS / 100GS etc., Stelvio, MultiStrada, Tenere, Africa Twin and many other larger bikes.

So many are doing this long distance riding like if it was hype.

Back in the seventies, eighties and nineties, it got increasingly popular to Sail around the world in sailing boats.

This is just another way to make the world look smaller.

That looks really nice, sadly they don't do it in the Matt Green anymore.

How loud is the Arrow exhaust? I've heard that they can be a bit too loud? I think a magazine tester had one a couple of years ago in TWO and had to take the Arrow off in the end as he thought it was too much. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts though.]]>

As regard their suitability I will refrain from comment, my only thought is that "nobody ever complained their bike was was not Heavy enough" light is good
However on the electronic front I dont think the manufactures have any choice, by 2015 (I think but it may be 2017) all bikes will have to have ABS, the emmision regs mean that they will all be fuel injected, given that they have to produce an electronic brain for the abs and FI i think the rest of the stuff comes along as a by product and doesent take much if any extra to fit on to the processer.
Not saying I like or want it just that there is no getting away from it, and even the smaller lighter for applicable bikes will have the same stuff as standard and nothing we will be able to do about it!!!!!!!]]>
