How old is the present mapping..as updates by the map company NOT garmnin are normaly every 5 years..and only include new roads..but sometimes inc roads that arent yet built..I never bother and mine are 2004..

Also the zumo660 have problems doing update..do a google search etc...get garmin basecamp and plan away merroly...

if it aint broke dont fix it....

The easiest way to get mapping up isopen basecamp on pc then connect sat nav via usb..after a coupole of minutes it should appear under the map icon..I aint no specialist on zumo...

but it probably came with mapsource on disc and was loaded and registered by previous owner..Garmin will want money to re register it...

also basecamp works on nweish pc not old stuff check requirements..have fun...and practise locally first with pre planned routes...

Have you registered machine at www.mygarmin.com. There is also advice and instructions there.

Been a while since I downloaded software update ... but still have this guide.

Sometimes best option is to download entire map file to basecamp - and then transfer selected regions/countries to your device - as newer maps sometimes require more memory space than is on the 660 itself.

personally if you have 2011 maps i wouldnt bother updating, garmin took 4 years to include the new roundabout outside my house!
also i'd get the disc, SD cards cock up occasionally, as do hard drives. if you do download it and youve got a dvd writer, garmin used to let you make 1 copy, dont know if they still do.

I've got an older 550 and I'm also trying to upload new 2013 mapping having paid for the download. So far I've been onto the tech support team 3 times and each time I've been told something different. Guess what, it still won't download.

Hugely frustrating so I'm going to request a refund, trouble is I have sneaking suspicion that there is something in the terms and conditions of the sale that means I'll get jack shit.

I did ask if they could supply it on disc or SD card but they said no.

My advice is avoid the download option

I was thinking of updating my 550 but now I think I might leave it after reading about the trouble you are having

Seriously, I wouldn't bother.

My maps are 2009 and on a recent trip around Europe with others who have the more up to date mapping there were a few times when their route was a bit different but only because it took new roads not on my unit.

The destination was the same and if you zoom out a bit you can see that you're still heading in the right direction.

THE Main problem seems to be that the new maps dont overwrite the old stuff as you would expect..so you need to delete the old stuff then install the new...

But if it goes pete tong..your left with nothing...and also Garmin wont confirm when the supppliers updated there mapping so as you get more countrys you get more roads par sa....it can be done but most dont bother..

Sounds about right, but it's a pretty shoddy affair. There's no way I'd take a chance but I determined to get a refund or at least credit of some kind.

Huge company like Garmin need to get their act together

Re: Zumo 660 9 months, 1 week ago #157874

Well I can certainly say that for this sat nav that suppose to be so dam good, I had a bit of a scare when it wan't update when I try to, and it kept saying memory full and I couldn't update, I talk to garmin and I said could I do a factory reset and wipe the hole thing and start again, they told me that you couldn't do that as there was no software to reinstall the programs, but they send a sequence to do it, I now manage to update and it seems to be ok but I can only do europe with out Russia and the Baltic states witch sucks, I don't think I will buy another one of this, there are to expensive and it want store to SD card.

am I right in thinking that the new 2012 update includes baltic states etc ...but the file is so big it wont fit on in one go....so it is basically useless

Now i`m pretty sure that the mapping Garmin will have used for these states/countries is what they already have/offer on sd card..they have just bundeled it together..think Microsoft con ..

Now I`m a firm believer in never having all my eggs in one basket so stick with pre 2012 stuff and get sd cards for the extra places you visit..they can be got cheaply from third parties and are normally unlocked
