I use a bungee from the side-stand to the frame / bars etc so that if the bike edges forward in-spite of being in gear, then the stand won't flip up.

Every ferry company seems to be different with regards to what they supply and who does it. DFDS out of Newcastle provide straps, but P & O from Hull to Zeebrugge only provide dirty rope as an example. If in doubt, take your own ratchets and do it yourself, thinking carefully what you strap down to where. Never had the strap over the seat, and don't want to.

A few years ago a mate of mine was with us on a trip to Spain riding a 916
The ferry staff were taking ages strapping bikes down.
He got the arse and started doing it himself with one of their ratchet straps.

Click, click, click, click, SNAP, crash.

Sidestand snapped, over it went.

When i came back from France last week all of our 8 bikes were strapped down by the excellent Brittany Ferries staff. I was paranoid about my bike but i watched what they did and not a single scratch and, neither did it move an inch. I used the side stand for both trips as i heard its safer.

Hope this helps.
