TOPIC: Flip-up lid

Flip-up lid 1 year ago #144347

Always fancied a flip-up lid. Just wondering as to which are the best for about £300... Is it illegal to ride with the chin bit flipped up?

Re: Flip-up lid 1 year ago #144350

Not illegal, it's just like riding with an open face lid with your goggles sitting on top
I like my flip top lid, internal sun visor and adequate ventilation. Not an expensive one though, got mine at the NEC bike show a couple of years ago for about £125.

Mines a HJC btw. Forgot to mention it earlier

Try the Schuberth C3. V comfy and quiet. You can also get the Bluetooth collar for it giving connectivity to all things electronic.

I read somewhere that it is illegal to ride with the chin bit up as the type approval or whatever its called for the helmet is with it down as all the tests are carried out with it down???

Hi Marco..
yep unless its on the helmet that it can be ridden with flip up its illegal and it states so on the helmet by a sticker..

Ive had the caberge justilmo very old now but it was great with flip down sun visor and good for fuel stations and tolls abroad..

Now have the Nolan n103 ..never again their quality and back up sucks..the pin lock design moved and scratched the visor..they replaced the pin lock wit ha new desigh but not the front visor..

All flip helmets are heavier than normal helmets and noisier apart from schuberth..they all fit different heads to so try them on ..before a hair cut

The pin locks are excellent for winter and raining zero condensation..for genreal motorcycling I like them..and the flip is great in summer as you can open at traffic lights for more air and to smile at the nice ladies ..

Givi flip front with internal fast return tinted visor.
£160 from J&S would never go back to a full face now. though its a bit noisy at speed.

My helmet didn't have a sticker to say don't ride with it up, so i I do, but only slow speeds, and usually when its very hot. I pulled up next to a bobby-bike in the London rush hour last time I was down there, and he had his up. Said Hello, and we carried on......

If you ride like the wind, expect to get blown away. One lifetime is all we get use it wisely this ain;t no practise.

Helmet Law Is the Direct.Gov page on the matter.

It doesn't appear to be law that you have to have the Flip up down, same as it isn't law to wear eye protection. However if you do wear Eye protection it has to be to " either:
1. a British Standard and display a BSI Kitemark
2. a European standard which offers a level of safety and protection at least equivalent to the British Standard and carry a mark equivalent to the BSI Kitemark (ECE 22-05)"

Common sense says at speed put the flip up bit down, regardless of what a sticker inside or on it says. Just because it has a sticker says it's law in one country or state, doesn't mean it's law in all countries and states. For example in France it is law to have reflective stickers front, back and on both left and right sides - that is in France and only France.

Hope that helps

I've used a Caberg Justimmo GT flip for the last three years and been happy with it.

Been considering the new Caberg Duke helmet.

Usual flip and sun visor, but now with pinlock and lock up flip so can be used open.

Around £150 buys one.

Ive been looking at flip front's too. I think at the minute the best has got to be the Shoei Neotec, although very expensive. Just a shame Arai dont do one as im a bit of a loyalist .

Got the Schubert and love it. Quiet comfy and has the cruiser function where you can pop the visor away from the helmet by 1mm-2mm on either 1 side or both for extra ventilation. Not as quiet as I was led to believe but still quieter than most. ear plugs still needed.
I work to live. I live to ride. I ride to work, Ever felt like your going in circles.

Re: Flip-up lid 1 year ago #144393

I recently picked up a Nolan 104 quieter than my previous helmet, larger than average visor area, and vents that actually work, the sales staff at H.G.tell me you can legally ride with the flip in the raised position and priced around £250 reasonable value.

I have a Nolan N90s. Very comfortable, but........
Noisy as hell and the chin vents manage to stream two small jets of air directly up my nose which is very irritable.
I love the convenience of getting it on and off very easy though.

I've had the schuberth C2 and can recommend,I've heard good reports of the C3 too.

The main reason I wouldn't travel at speed with the front up is safety, if you come off and roll, the open lid can prevent your head turning with your body!

You cannot ride a with a flip front helmet open unless it has type approval

RTA 1988

18 Authorisation of head-worn appliances for use on motor cycles.(1)The Secretary of State may make regulations prescribing (by reference to shape, construction or any other quality) types of appliance of any description to which this section applies as authorised for use by persons driving or riding (otherwise than in sidecars) on motor cycles of any class specified in the regulations.
(2)Regulations under this section—
(a)may impose restrictions or requirements with respect to the circumstances in which appliances of any type prescribed by the regulations may be used, and
(b)may make different provision in relation to different circumstances.
(3)If a person driving or riding on a motor cycle on a road uses an appliance of any description for which a type is prescribed under this section and that appliance—
(a)is not of a type so prescribed, or
(b)is otherwise used in contravention of regulations under this section,

he is guilty of an offence.

I love my Caberg Konda, way under budget, sun visor, comfy, great finish and 5 star Sharp rating.
