90% of my riding is in London where the Terra Adventure is perfect, given the small engine but big road presence. The rest is mainly A and B roads where the Derbi is happy cruising within the speed limits. The only time I really feel I'm on a 125cc is dual-carriageways where some of the traffic is doing 80 and I'm coming up behind a truck doing 60.

Would I ever do the test? Yes, if the rumoured combining of Modules 1&2 actually happens I might consider it or if I move back to France where you don't have to do endless tests to move from one class of license to another, instead you do 7 hours compulsory training on a bike the size up.]]>

www.facebook.com/groups/derbi.terra.adventure.uk

That's assuming you haven't already. Currently there's one member selling a Terra Adventure, and a couple of listings that people have found.

Oh and ignore everyone who says do your DAS, if all you want is a cheap way of commuting, but that feels like you might just ride right past work and not stop till Magadan, then you know that the Derbi is the bike for you.

What a lot of seasoned bikers don't realize is the cost of getting a full A1, A2 or A motorbike license. It seems since the ludicrous introduction of a driving test that restricts you forever to only riding the same size bike that you take your test on, prices have gone through the roof. I was recently quoted £750 for three days. I asked if I could do a bit of training on my own 125 and of course health and safety prevented this.

Day 1. A full day spent assessing my abilities and correcting any faults with training for Module 1 (manoeuvring/riding within the confines of a test centre).
Day 2. Training for Module 2 (the on road testing component) spread either side of the Module 1 test.
Day 3. Further training then pass Module 2.

I asked what happens if my Mod 2 is early morning, I'll have paid for the day but only got a couple of hours. Answer "Well you'll have passed, who cares?"

So save the huge amount of cash it would cost to get a license for a bike you have no intention of buying, spend £100 on a CBT, buy a Derbi Terra Adventure and be part of an elite group of only 130 (the total number registered in the UK) and be happy spending the money you've saved.]]>

Gonna give it atleast a year on this bike then take my theory and probably do the A2 test. Makes more sense and doesn't limit my options when I get bored of the 125cc.

Any recommendations on a trailie/adventure style for less than £2k, bearing in mind I am 6f4" so I cant fit on a CBF/CB or YBR.

I was in exactly the same boat as you. I always ride/drive everything I own to its limits so when I started on motorbike last year I only wanted a small engine low power bike. I have a car for thrashing round and grinding out motorway miles.

I took my A2 a few weeks ago and I must say that it completely changed the way I ride, I feel so much safer than I did because of the training.

My intention was to get a CRF250L new as it would be good fun, efficient and not too fast but in a moment of madness I got a DR-Z400 off this site. I must say I am so pleased I did. The DR is built for tall people (I'm 5'10" and can barely touch the ground) and its got a pleasantly low top speed so I can't get too carried away.

That sais those Terra Adventures look ace but I don't think you can buy them new anymore.

Whatever you do good luck and welcome tot he forum.]]>

I know there are three tests A1 (max of 15 hp) A2 (max of 46 hp) and A (all bikes)

The thing is I have had fast quad bikes and quick-ish cars and thought whats the

point. Having a bigger bike will only want me to go quicker and I would rather limit

myself.

So having a 125cc would be fine as I only want it for commuting which is 6 miles a

day.

I have made up my mind and only want a 125cc and trying to find out which one to get.

Wouldn't mind a Honda Varadero, but for £2.5 to £3k for a 3 year old one, I can buy

a new Derbi Terra Adventure.

I have had a few 125cc bikes and loved them too bits until I had an accident with a lorry. The lorry won and it crushed my bike, put me off biking for 2 years and now I am ready to return back to it.

Gotta start from scratch and so do my CBT again.

Dont know whether to buy a decent 125cc bike (Derbi Terra Adventure) or buy a cheap enduro style to practice on then go for the full test. Not really bothered about how fast it can go as I'll only use it for work and thats only a 6 mile journey each day. I am contemplating just getting a decent 125cc and doing my test on that and keeping it. It am 6ft4" so an adventure style would suit me best best, also it was a Derbi Terra that got squashed so I kind of want it back.

I have a car to get rid of so the funds will come from that, so I have £2.5 to £3k to spend on a bike.

Help would be most grateful.

Thanks

I'm from the West Country but work in Almaty. Currently in UK for a few weeks before a euro tour to Greece via the Balkans and Albania in June.

I have been a member of UKGSER, never heard of this site until a friend mentioned it. I have signed up to sell my XT600e. Hoping I can be of help to people.

I have knowledge of central Asia, esp KZ, so if there is anything I can do to advise or support trips into the region don't hesitate to ask. Through CouchSurfing I have hosted numerous bikers and cyclists. It's a popular route these days. I speak Russian and can help with local issues.

I've toured India on a Bullet. Can make recommendations on hiring and riding there.

I successfully bought and imported a Goldwing from USA so can contribute to discussions along these lines.

Anyone in Bristol with time for a ride out before end of May, drop me a line. We're off to Abergaveny tomorrow (12th May).]]>
