Hi everyone, Just thought I would share my experience as a 40+ born again biker.I returned to biking at 40 and dipped my toes into an adventure to the South of France. From there despite family and business restrictions, I am hooked. Last year me and my mate Mike decided to undertake a civilised but long adventure. My wife Maria was a bit concerned, given that I hadn't ridden that far, ever. I feel that depite a twenty year riding break that I am sensible and reasonably confident. We enrolled on an Enhanced Rider Course with a chap cal...

That is the Prototype built. Couple of bits I am not happy with on this one so will improve the next model Here you can see the bottom lip folded up ready for the base and the seam on the right rivited inside. I will move this seam to the outside so I dont have a sharp edge. This one shows the base fitted on the prototype and you can see the sharp edge on the left that I wish to get rid of. ...

Set out for my next point and has I was just leaving Ardagh the Garda (Irish Police) pulled me over. Switching off the bike and wondering what the hell I’d done, a lone cop gets out and comes over to me smiling. “Just seen you taking photos, Doing the photo rally ar ye?”. With a nod for the head to confirm I remove my helmet. He was doing the rally himself so if was “How much have you done so far?” Where are you headed now? Having answered It turns out he rides a 1150GS .Said he would be doing the...
Been doing the Irish Photographic Rally this year and decided to do the ones in Counties Longford, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway in a day. Up with the sun and a hearty breakfast throw a few things like stove and tea bags into the top box. Camera in tank bag and head out the door. Trip over the cat trying to get in has I try and get out , the wife will find the note on the kitchen table, “See you later dear” It was a lot later. Headed across by Banbridge town and down into Armagh, A good road for the bike, some nice bends if it wasn’t for...
Are you fed up with smelling like a rotting cabbage after sweating it out on a long overseas trip? Yeah, me too, so I thought I'd put a merino wool top through it's paces in the only way that counts; the Adventure Travel (and now, the Adventure Bike Rider) 'sniff my pits' gear test. After years of hiking in man made base layers and smelling like a month old bag of groceries the key question was, would I, or more to the point, would my partner survive a five day adventure in the Alps? The test was extreme, not so much for me, the tester, but for t...
Building the Ultimate Adventure Bike Let’s face it, we all dream of making that BIG motorcycle trip to discover faraway lands and unfamiliar cultures, but fear of the unknown prevents many riders from giving up the security of their home lives and making the switch from office chair to motorcycle seat – and quite possibly having the experience of a lifetime. My passion for adventure motorcycling has led me to publish three books on the subject - Adventure Motorcycling, Adventure Riding Techniques and just last m...
It was Tuesday morning, the Land Rover was packed full to bursting and we set off from our home in Central France, destination: Bavaria. We were due to meet friends at a camp site in Badkissengen the following evening. Two hours later, having stopped at a toll booth, ’im-who-thinks-he’s-in-charge , aka Darren (hubby), noticed a problem. We parked up to find coolant literally pouring from the radiator. On further inspection it became clear there was no way the Landy was going to make it to Bavaria anytime that week. After a temporary r...
Well. Its been a while since I was out on my last big trip on the bike. This year, I finally wanted to head out for Norway, Sweden and Finland. So I once more dough up my alloy side cases, the waterproof roll and my old tank bag. I soon remembered, that with the tank bag I was nothing else than annoyed. This floppy thing in front of me was anything but good, or functional. Always a struggle to put the rain cover on and just in my way all the time. Not to mention, that if you use a map, it has to b...
Hi Everyone I'm quite new to the world of biking (having only been on the back of my partner's in the past year and a bit in total). My partner, on the other hand, has an ongoing passion for motorbikes. So far I have heard the partner mention the word 'farkling' (spelled correctly??). From my limited understanding 'farkling' is what one does when one is attempting to add bits to the bike or when generally tinkering with it. 'RTW" is an obvious one I think...Round The World. In a bid to 'get in the know' a ...
Just nipping into Staples in Stratford... met three blokes on some seriously packed motorcycles. We have a biker's chat including such interesting things as the benefits of square box panniers.. and it turns out that these men are just setting of on a trip to the Alps! Alun Davies gave me a card for the website, and Ive just registered. What a great site, and local folk too. I've just come back from a trip to Ireland with a friend who comes from the Emerald Isle setting off from Mickleton, picking up my mate at Cirencester, off t...
Welcome to my Picture Blog . .Part One I am so lucky to live in this beautiful part of Scotland , were the roads are made for biking. The weather can be changeable but that is why it's ever so green. Most weekends and evenings in the summer, I hit the back roads for a bit of fun and see what sights I can spot. There is beautiful scenery in every direction but sometimes it is hard to stop and get that picture because of the fantastic roads. Mongolia & our last border crossing into RussiaWe entered Mongolia full of anticipation and excitement, knowing that this land provides some of the finest off road riding on earth and we weren’t disappointed. A Mongolian localOur first nights camp was at an impossibly scenic spot on the bend of a river surrounded by utter wilderness. A small but constant flow of curios Mongolians trotted by on their horses to drink tea with us and look at the bikes. With dinner completed a full moon rose illuminating the countryside in a bright s...
