A rocket elbow is so-called because of its shape; two cylinders forming a right angle. One end is for inserting fuel and drawing in (and pre-heating) air; the other is for combusting the gases and smoke from the wood and emitting the heat.

This stove is incredibly efficient, and independent tests around the world have concluded that for cooking a family meal it will use as little as 20% of the wood required by a carefully tended open fire. The thickly-insulated combustion chamber places the pot at the optimum height above the fire to ensure that most smoke has been burned and is ready to give its heat to your pot. An adjustable wind-guard further increases efficiency and means you can use this in windy conditions. You can expect this stove to last: the designers have tested individual stoves for 2700 hours, and they are still going strong. Looking for a cheap, versatile and bombproof stove without spending £140+? Designed by the military these are quiet, need no priming, have no moving parts to go wrong or lose/replace,can be used with the meths burner, hex tablets, gel fuel, gas burners, vodka,IPA etc etc or just over a camp fire (the pans are actually designed for open fire cooking.) I am very impressed with the tiny amount of twigs it uses, though it means you have to tend it. I haven't done a scientific benchmark with a litre of water but it heated up my sausage stew and a kettle for coffee the other lunchtime with no problem.
