I decided to bite the bullet and go for it,spend money on some decent kit. After a bit of research I went for the Rukka Athos. So far it has been totally waterproof having been trough a drenching on the way to Ghent in the summer (Jun 10) and another drenching on the way to RTTW (Oct 10). It can get a bit hot during the summer months as there is no venting, but there is a removable liner. It is now October and I haven't yet needed to put the liner back in, so it is pretty warm during the Autumn months.So far I haven't needed to test the protection. I bought it from a german company via the internet bikerland.de (their website is in english as well). so far I have purchsed a number of items from them and they have proved very good, although delivery times are slightly longer as they are shipped from Germany.
