I didn't believe it until I rode from Nelson to the Coromandel Peninsular (NZ) All up 22 hour trip non stop to get to the family for Xmass. Yes we do have to cross from the South Island to the North but no worries, it's all part of the fun.

For years I have raved on about the 950's and 990's as the ultimate bike. Until now that is. The SMT rates as one of the best bikes I have ever ridden. The handling is superb, the brakes enough to scare the hell out of my mate John riding up behind me on his ol GS, you can ride in a relaxed state, keeping to the speed limit of dial the power on and have a blast through the twisties. The SMT is a nicely balanced bike that requires less effort than the rather hefty adventure and one particular strength is the windshield. I am 1.9m tall and it actually works unlike the 990 versions.

When are KTM going to build one that is adjustable. (For the 990)

So after 22 hours straight I fell into bed with a smile on my face and looking forward to the rest of the journey.

So all in all I can highly recommend this bike for what it is pitched at. A touring SM that handles like a dream, fast and stops well. And far too much fun to be legal.

Not sure how it would go off road but I guess with a bigger front wheel (with wire spokes), some handlebar raisers and some crash bars it might surprise us.

And to finish I do like the look of it better than all that plastic on the 990 ADV, Just seems a little more naked but this is personal preference only.

So if you get the chance take one for a spin you wont regret it. Ciao fro now, Steve
