Spencer Conway, the author of the Angola and Congo feature in issue 1 of ABR is due to return from his motorbike expedition next week. His trip has covered almost one fifth of the world’s surface area.
In 9 months he has visited 34 countries and 60,000 kilometres following the coast of Africa. Covering more than double the distance travelled by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, he has pledged to raise £28k for Save the Children, helping some of the world’s poorest children. In November 2009, Spencer left behind his family and embarked on a lifelong ambition to circumnavigate Africa, riding through hostile terrain and some of the world’s most politically unstable countries, stopping off to see Save the Children’s work on the way. Conway is to return on Sunday 15th August, when his friends and family will be giving him a hero’s welcome at his hometown in Biddenden in Kent, Despite receiving overwhelming support, he is still a little short of his £28k pledge and is appealing to the general public will help him reach his target during the final leg of his journey. Spencer Conway has chosen to fundraise for Save the Children as he believes: “The merits of Save the Children are self-evident as ALL children deserve proper healthcare, food, education and protection. Although completing the trip would be an achievement in itself, I have decided to try and raise £28,000 for Save the Children, making this endeavour infinitely more worthwhile.” Throughout his adventure, Conway has recorded his extraordinary experiences, recounting everything including his escape from bandits, the odd robbery and stone showers. But, from a continent of contrasts, he also talks fondly about the hospitality of the local communities and the beauty of the African landscape. Spencer has undertaken this budget trip unaccompanied, camping all the way and relying on the hospitality of the local people. He has made numerous local TV and radio appearances across Africa, promoting his trip and Save the Children’s work. Lucy Mousdale from Supporter Relations & Fundraising at Save the Children said: “Save the Children has been blown away by Spencer’s fantastic support over the past year. He and his entire family have worked tirelessly over the past year to raise an incredible amount of money that will make such a difference to vulnerable children around the world. We have been fascinated by his blogs and hearing about his adventure. It would be amazing if we could celebrate Spencer’s homecoming by smashing his £28,000 pledge”
