Day 5 Poznan Poland to Olsztyn Poland

No one to share breakfast with today as we were in a hotel. Petrol top up 127ZL (£30 ish)

Scott threw his camera off Gerry  at speed on the motor way so we stopped, very hairy having trucks pull up behind you to overtake. Bits flew everywhere as it bounced passed me but Scott managed to collect them all, put the camera back together and it still worked!

Day 2 Hoek Van Holland to Klauknhof Germany Freizeitpark campsite.

50E for petrol for both bikes. Stopped at Hunxe after a two hour ride for dinner and tried using the translator. After letting us spent ten minutes  working out what to ask for the chef spoke English.

We set off for the camp site but it was throwing it down so hard you could barely see in front of yourself and somewhere on the motorway we lost each other for the first and last time of the trip. This is when we discovered our Sat Nav’s like going completely different ways to each other, to the same destination.  We also discovered my phone had no signal and our first day in a foreign country we had separated and had no way of contacting each other. It was quite worrying. Scott went into panic mode and tried looking for me and phoning me and in the end hoped for the best and followed his sat nav to the camp site.  I had in the mean time realised there was nowhere to stop and carried on. I parked up at the campsite and had a fag. After 15 minutes I started to worry that we  would never see each other again L Scotts face was a picture when he finally pulled up he got off and gave me a big hug.

Got hold of some stainless steal sheets so going to make panniers for the bike.

Seen a mate and got measurments  from his set. Made a drawing of how to fabricate them not decided on how to make the lids yet.

Bid on ebay for a Givi rack to mount them on but got out bid at the last moment. So got a bid on another one now see what happens. Might even make my own rack not shure yet.

Headed from Lough Corrib out to county Galway.  Passing through the village of Cong in county Mayo, better known for the film ‘The Quiet Man’ starring John Wayne. Was going to stop here and have a look but you could not even get parked. Buses of tourists filling the place so Galway county here I come. http://www.museumsofmayo.com/quietman.htm

Out the R345 to Maam Cross and onto the R336 to Leenane. This is Joyce’s Country
http://connemara.galway-ireland.ie/joyce-country.htm

Follow the N59 through Connemara and try to keep your eyes on the road, this is a beautiful corner of Ireland  with mountains , lakes and grand views across the country sure to distract you. With the Twelve Pins ( Twelve Bens) on your left I head on to Clifden and up to the Cregg Mast.

Set out for my next point and has I was just leaving Ardagh the  Garda (Irish Police) pulled me over. Switching off the bike and wondering what the hell I’d done, a lone cop gets out and comes over to me smiling. “Just seen you taking photos, Doing the photo rally ar ye?”. With a  nod for the head to confirm I remove my helmet. He was doing the rally himself so if was “How much have you done so far?” Where are you headed now? Having answered  It turns out he rides a 1150GS .Said he would be doing the northern points later in the year. So with a swap of name and phone numbers I told him to give me a bell when he gets north.  Back on the road and another hour takes me to my next photo shoot.
An old windmill near Four Roads (yes that is the name of a place) in County Roscommon.

Was going to make this a stop and have a brew up, but it was beside a farm and the field beside it had a large amount of fresh cow dung  stored there.  Finished getting a few shots and a van stops “you all right there” “Ye fine “ I reply, the next I know me’s parked behind me. The tail of the van blocking half the road, out me gets and  tell me he has an old FJ1200 himself  and what a fine look’in Triumph that is.
It turns out he lives a hundred yards up the road and his misses has been see’n all the bikes stopping  and I explained to him.

Show him my next stop. “ Its not far to that , half an hour may-be no more than 15 miles” So saying good bye I set off knowing a brew was not far away. I think it must be Irish miles because an hour and a half later I’ve covered about 56 miles and can’t find the bloody place. I’m now in county Mayo looking for the old lighthouse on Lough Corrib. The sat nav points a right turn but the road is a dead end, not even water to be seen never mind a lighthouse.  Back up the road and I see workmen at a house. Park the bike and take the hat off. A car pulls up “ You looking for the lighthouse” a woman calls. “Its down that lane your parked beside and take no notice off the sign, it’s a public road” a wave and away she goes .  Looking at the sign telling all this is a private road, I start up and head down it. Some of the houses built down here are beautiful. So after about a quarter mile the lough shore appears.

I park the bike and set up my stove and get a brew going, take my photo and sit and listen. Bar a few birds and the water gently lapping on the rocks  with the pinging  sound  from my exhaust cooling . Silence. I sat and had my tea in peace with just my thoughts , I understood  why they had put a sign up at the lane entrance.

Packed up I sit down for another few minutes and soak in the silence.   Its time to head on to my next point, has I start the bike I feel like I've just spoiled  the beauty of this place a little.

Been doing the Irish Photographic Rally this year and decided to do the ones in Counties Longford, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway in a day. Up with the sun and a hearty breakfast throw a few things like stove and tea bags into the top box. Camera in tank bag and head out the door.  Trip over the cat trying to get in has I try and get out , the wife will find the note on the kitchen table, “See you later dear” It was a lot later. Headed across by Banbridge town and down into Armagh, A good road for the bike, some nice bends if it wasn’t for all the poor sods heading to work as the sun gets warmer even this early. Getting through Armagh was slow but what’s new. Take the turn for Monaghan and what use to be a fantastic road on a bike has been murdered on the ROI side with double white lines. A stop in the town for a coffee and its on to Clones the town were ex-boxer Barry Mc Guigan comes from. Turn south and the next place is Cavan. I always like to go into towns rather that round them, you never know what you find interesting in them. In this case not a lot but got got a wave from a young lass opening a shop. Next county is Longford the first photo stop . Maybe I should tell you a bit about the rally, to hell ,go here and read about it and see all 24 points on the map.   http://www.irishphotorally.com/year/2010

Right I follow the GPS to the Village of Ardagh, down some single track roads (must remember to photograph some of these roads/lanes) and on to a main road into the village,

This is the target where I’m to photograph, the bike at. So park up and take a wander around the small village. Locals heading out wave and toot their horns has they get used seeing strange bikers in the village. A few stop and pass a few minutes chatting to find out what you doing ,were you come from, while others look at the mad biker sitting on the green and plod on. One young  lady was passing by and I don't think she was awake until she walked into me.

Saint Patricks Church. Ardagh

The Village green.

A drink of water and I set the GPS for the next point which is in County Roscommon.
